“You were given a chance because you didn’t quit.”
At present, Hee-do’s daughter Min-chae, is determined to quit ballet, but Hee-do still brings her to therapy, and allows her to eat burger.
Reaching the comfort room of the place, a transition to 1998 begins where Yi-jin delivers the newspaper with the lock code for the CR.
Seung-wan notices the shirt of Yi-jin, and becomes conscious of the fact that he is a senior of the broadcasting club of their school.
Coach Yang informs that there is an opening in the national team, and only up to the 24th rank can compete in the qualifiers. Hee-do falls short for two spots as she is at the 26th, however, she is still hopeful to reach that spot someday.
In their Korean history class, Yu-rim is punished for not having her textbook, and Ji-woong tosses his book to Hee-do so that he could receive the punishment together with Yu-rim.
Seung-wan invites Hee-do for lunch, and consults her situation with Yi-jin, but Hee-do assures that Yi-jin is a nice senior.
“I just feel like I’m really an adult now. I suddenly realized I don’t have a guardian. But I’m going to be a guardian for my little brother.”
Treating his brother, Yi-hyun, for a burger, Yi-jin sees his brother’s bullies, and warns them not to bother Yi-hyun again.
While training, the members of the fencing team hear about the release of the latest volume of Full house, which makes them rush to the nearest bookstores. Hee-do arrives at the store Yi-jin is working at, and asks for a copy, but Yi-jin tells her that all has been rented already.
However, Hee-do spots a copy of it, and Yi-jin intentionally has saved it for Yu-rim. Arriving at the shop, Yu-rim and Hee-do get into a heated argument, and Yi-jin’s decides to rent the copy to their store’s regular member, Hee-do.
“It’s easy to ask. But does it hurt their pride? No one ever asks me for help.”
Coach Yang announces that the two fencers above Hee-do’s rank cannot compete for the spot in the national team, and Hee-do gets congratulated for the opportunity to compete.
On her way home, she notices a man who she thinks is a creditor in the house Yi-jin is living in. She rushes to Yi-jin, and replaces him at the counter. Hee-do walks Yi-jin home, and as they separate ways, Yi-jin reads a note that tells it was his father who came by.
Picking up the note, Hee-do also rushes to find the man. Going to the bus station, Yi-jin meets his father, and tearfully promises that he will reunite their family.
Yi-jin spots Hee-do still in a panic to find the man she mistook as a creditor, but her slippers get broken. Worried about Her-do who is about to compete at the qualifiers, the two walk home with their feet tied together.
With her humble request to receive extra training for the qualifiers, Hee-do follows the instructions of Coach Yang. This catches the attention of her teammates, and Yu-rim asks their coach about it, and the coach responds that it was not special treatment. Other members could have also asked her for help, but no one has ever done so.
“I guess there are tiers even in effort although everyone endured the same.”
Leaving together with other members, Yu-rim goes back to the gym to train more. Hee-do is also there, and their senior angrily arrives at the gym as she is caught by their coach playing in the computer shop.
Their senior attacks Yu-rim for staying late, and Hee-do tries to defend her. However, Yu-rim apologizes and accepts the punishment of their senior.
Hee-do questions Yu-rim’s decisions, and they get into an argument, where Yu-rim emphasizes the difference between average fencers like Hee-do.
Visiting the bookstore, Hee-do requests Yi-jin to say that Yu-rim was in the wrong, but she walks out seeing the hesitance of Yi-jin. She feels down, realizing how her idol treats her, and talks with her friend whom she always chatted with. They have always wondered whether they have passed by each other already, and are grateful for each other’s existence, however unknown to each other, Yu-rim is the one at the other end of the line.
Twenty Five Twenty One Episode 3 Musings
Differences in terms of being financially incapable have been highlighted in this episode. With the players who ranked above Hee-do, we can see that the lack of resources can truly hinder one to reach their dream.
Yi-jin, who has a lot of trouble with suddenly becoming an adult, protects his brother instead of his parents. Such a feeling of Yi-jin becoming an adult can resonate with people who are in their twenties.
The difference of the responsibilities and priorities are recognizable when the lives of Hee-do and Yi-jin are compared. For Hee-do, there are a lot of good things that have been happening lately even though there may be saddening moments with regards to meeting her fencing idol, Yu-rim.
On Yi-jin’s part, his problems and troubles are highlighted as he looks out for his family’s situation more. Moreover, he is well aware of the privileges he has had when he was still rich.
Yu-rim and Hee-do appear to have tension as they are both in the fencing team. However, they just do not know that the reliable friend that they are talking to is each other. There are hopes with their friendship, and hopefully, they overcome the senior who treats them badly for standing out.
