“True lonely people are the ones who can’t even say they’re lonely.”
Sim Woo-joo is a young apathetic woman, scarred by her parents’ divorce. She lives with her two siblings. Her father left them for another woman who used to be her mother’s friend. They left with the Sim family’s valuables and savings. This experience led her to resent his father for ruining their happy family. She did not study in college to help their family. She works various part-time jobs.
Her eldest sister, Sim Hye-sung, works in a bank and is the only one who has a full-time job. Her younger brother, Sim Ji-gu studies for the Civil Service Exam. When they learned about their father’s demise, Woo-joo came to the wake wearing inappropriate clothing to humiliate her father and her mistress-turned-wife, Hee-ja.
“I understand that it’s your personality to have no filter. But that doesn’t mean you can be rude.”
Soon after, Hee-ja kicks them out of their own house, saying her husband gave it to her as an inheritance. Woo-jo becomes angrier when she learns that Hee-ja will be selling their house. Woo-jo is so mad and frustrated that she wants to get revenge on Hee-ja and the only way to get to her she thinks is through her son, Han Dong-jin. Sim Woo-jo and her siblings end up staying at her best friend, Yoon Jun’s house.
Woo-joo starts stalking Dong-jin and successfully gets a part-time job in his company. As she works in the company, she learns that Dong-jin is a lonely and timid person who doesn’t fight back even if someone does something bad to him. He even let her ex-girlfriend cheat on him. He ignores his rival company’s CEO who tries to ruin his company.
“It was my heart. It led me here to you.”
Dong-jin also doesn’t have a good relationship with her mother because of the countless times her mother abandoned him for another guy. Woo-jo wants to ruin Dong-jin’s company too, but after learning that he is nothing like her mother, her feelings change.
As she learns about him more, she finds herself getting attracted to him. She sees herself in Dong-jin, how broken he is just like her. She tries to hide her feelings but Dong-jin also falls in love with her. This situation brings a dilemma to Woo-jo as she is the only one who knows that the two of them cannot be together because of the circumstances brought by their parents.
Will Woo-joo continue to exact revenge against Dong-jin or will she let her emotions get the better of her? What punishments await Hee-ja in the end? Can Woo-jo and Dong-jin find the happiness that they truly deserve?
Call It Love Series Highlights and Musings
We can say that this is one of those melodramas that is satisfying to watch. Strangely, the sadness in this drama brings happiness to viewers.
The cinematography was great in that it was able to show the emotions of the characters very well. Kudos to how the writer wrote this masterpiece. The narrative was able to navigate each character’s perspective well and the viewers were able to understand and relate to each of them.
This drama might have a slow start, you have to watch a few more episodes before you see the beauty in it. Maybe the writer did that for viewers to better understand each character. And as we understand, we begin to love them and root for them that’s why we continue watching the drama.
Call It Love also makes us realize that sometimes we think our situation is the worst but once we start and try to look around us, we can see that it is not only us who does our best to survive. That being said, sometimes we are still lucky enough if we just know what we have and learn to appreciate it more.
Proving that revenge is clearly not a good thing to do to appease our personal grudges, Call It Love asserts carrying prolonged emotional baggage limits us from achieving peace.
Emotionally Charged Portrayals
Notably, the actors also amazingly brought to life the characters very well especially the main leads, Kim Young Kwang and Lee Sung Kyung. We certainly have good memories of Kim Young Kwang.
We’ve seen him in his previous dramas, and he never disappoints. He always portray his characters very well. Just by his gaze, you would already feel his emotions. His role rendition for Call It Love was raw and lingering.
As for Lee Sung Kyung, we can say she superbly captured her role in this series. She made sure the nuances of her character were depicted considering her motivations and back story. Hopefully, her performance will be noticed as the effort she poured was on a different level. The commitment of Lee Sung Kyoung to portray an interesting mix of restrained yet mercurial characters shines through in the series.
Additionally, the supporting cast did their part very well. Kim Ye Won as Hye-sung brings comical relief to this melodrama. Sung Joon as Yoon Jun also did a good job as Woo-joo’s best friend, someone who always helps and supports her.
Lastly, the writer decides to give us hope that it is indeed a happy ending for Woo-joo and Dong-jin at least gave a gratifying closure.
