Yumi’s Cells Opening Week Story

Life has been normal for Kim Yumi (Kim Go Eun) having a stable job. But like any other 32-year old single woman, she yearns to move past her bachelorette status. Fortunately, there’s cute junior U-gi (Choi Minho) in the office she and her cells are particularly fond of.

So when they get a chance to possibly end her love drought, Yumi and her cells go all out to achieve the mission. However, pretty younger officemate Ruby (Lee Yoo Bi) is making it hard for Team Yumi to work on its aim.

Creating an opening to her goal, she successfully wards off Ruby to spend time alone with U-gi when she almost crashed on their planned flower festival date. Finally alone with him, all his questions lead to a dating trajectory. But her high expectation shattered – when U-gi’s intention is to set her up with a blind date to a close hyung.

Agreeing to U-gi’s request, she meets Gu-woong (Ahn Bo Hyun) who went blank after being swept by Yumi’s charms. His cells are not helping at all to create a good impression by throwing lame jokes on her.

Will love blossom between Yumi and Gu-woong?

Yumi’s Cells Opening Week Musings

Certainly, an upbeat watch but Yumi’s Cells is not strikingly hooking on its first serving. Nonetheless, the light, feel-good undertones assure viewers of an optimistic story ahead.

Inserting the cells’ thoughts to the lead characters’ perspectives drives adorable moments drawing surprises and giving clues to the viewers. It is apparent that the series takes the usual Korean romance drama plot. What’s unique is how viewers will not be alone figuring out the flow of the story owing to the active cells running the thought-process of the main leads.

Yumi's Cells

For fans who have been conditioned to perfect K-Drama male lead, the unkempt appearance of Ahn Bo Hyun might feel new. Thus, I’m looking forward to how Ahn Bo Hyun propels his A-game to his character of captivating not just Yumi, but the audience.

Meanwhile, Yumi’s role fits Kim Go Eun’s expressiveness in showing the shifts of emotions in her face, especially with her busy cells influencing her mood and personal missions.

Hopefully, the energy in the coming episodes sprint to a more infectious note – and we get an endearing romantic comedy we initially signed up for.
