The Divorce Insurance Opening Week Story
“I need details on a high-risk case like you to decide whether or not I should join this project.”
Catching up with our male lead, Actuary Noh Ki-jun (Lee Dong Wook), he is making a sales pitch about his company’s new insurance policy. However, it might not be the smartest idea to promote divorce insurance at a wedding fair. In other words, the customers don’t take kindly to Ki-jun’s team, and their attempts go down the flames.
Flashing back to 3 months ago, we learn how Ki-jun came up with the idea to issue divorce insurance. Having been married and divorced thrice, Ki-jun deems divorce the biggest disaster he has experienced in life. So, when tasked with developing a new product, Ki-jun jumps at the idea of keeping people from facing the same tragic fate he faced. Normally, anyone would consider Ki-jun’s idea absurd. But luckily for him, Ki-jun’s superior is about to get divorced. So, he gives Ki-jun the green light.
When Ki-jun presents his idea to the other departments, they look puzzled. Does divorce count as a disaster? Still, Ki-jun convinces them all, except for one person, Risk Surveyor Ahn Jeon-man (Lee Kwang Soo). Eventually, Ki-jin’s persistence wins, and Jeon-man comes around.
To get started, Ki-jun needs to recruit more people and form a task force team. The catch: to join the team, one should be divorced at least once. Surprisingly, the task force team gets many applicants. Yet none of them are qualified. Just as he is about to lose hope, Ki-jun comes upon the perfect applicant for this job, Underwriter Kang Han-deul (Lee Joo Bin). Funnily, Ki-jun and Han-deul had an embarrassing run-in outside the company and wished not to see each other again. But we guess that won’t be possible.
As we come to learn, Han-deul was recently divorced after her trashy husband cheated on her. Not only that, but he also had the nerve to turn over his debt to Han-deul to pay up. Having experienced the woes of divorce firsthand, Han-deul might be the right person for this job.

“This is the first place I visit before I start any type of project.”
Aside from Jeon-man and Han-deul, the team gets another member, Jo Ah-young (Chu So-jung). So, there are five in total, including Ki-jun’s superior, Na Dae-bok (Kim Won-hae). At the last minute, they are joined by a new member, Quant Jeon Na-rae (Lee Da-hee), who happens to be Ki-jun’s ex-ex-ex wife, his first wife.
Having different stances on what to do first, Ki-jun and Na-rae waste no time bickering. So, they decide to split into two teams and work simultaneously. While Ki-jun and Han-deul do some research on how to convince people of divorce insurance, Jeon-man and Na-rae gather some big data about divorce.
Rather than dropping by the courthouse or a law firm or visiting a psychology expert, like Han-deul suggested, Ki-jun takes her to a temple, where they meet his ex-ex-wife, his second wife, who is now a nun (cameo by Jo Bo-ah). Han-deul is taken aback, but she can see why Ki-jun considers the ex-ex wife his mentor and visits her before starting any project. Anyway, Ki-jun and Han-deul stay behind to watch the meteor shower, and they look more comfortable around each other now.

“There is only one place that can solve this dilemma.”
Having completed the preliminary work, Na-rae suggests they have a team dinner. But the whole time, she is jealous of Ki-jin and Han-deul’s close relationship. Earlier, Na-rae said she still has feelings for Ki-jun, though getting back together holds little to no chance. Which makes us curious how this arc will unfold.
Luckily, the board grants the divorce insurance a 6-month pilot period. Then, they will refine the product and launch it officially. Yet this is a conditional approval. Our team needs to sell 30 divorce insurance policies in 3 days and maintain a 0% divorce rate for the 6-month contract period. Meeting those conditions is a long shot, so most of the team wants to drop it. But Ki-jun is set on seeing this through.
This is how we circle back to the opening sequence, with Ki-jun dragging the team to a wedding fair to sell the 30 divorce insurance policies. Luckily, our divorce insurance team secured their first client. And then more people come over. But to our team’s shock, two clients turned out to be in-laws. And it is here that we close the premiere week.

The Divorce Insurance Opening Week Musings
This was an interesting premiere. The drama doesn’t take itself seriously, and the zany tone is a big draw. The humor mostly works for us, except for the toilet jokes. Also, we appreciate that there is more focus on the characters than the work they do.
At first, it seemed Ki-jun and Jeon-man were rivals. But they are long-time friends, and their bromance is a highlight. Han-deul is already friends with Ah-young. But we can see her becoming friends with Na-rae too. This is, of course, as long as we don’t get a love triangle between the two ladies.
It isn’t clear how much focus the romance will get, but we can see some chemistry between Ki-jun and Han-deul. Knitting aside, they share the trait of correcting people when they say the wrong word. Which took Han-deul by surprise as her ex-husband used to sneer at her for it. All in all, it was a good watch, though we aren’t totally hooked yet. Still, there is enough time for the drama to win us over. Keep it up, show.
