Alchemy of Souls Episode 10 Highlights
Driven apart as personal maid can’t enter Songrim, Mu-deok and Wook face the momentarily break in their routine. Still not labeling the dependence they have on each other; Yul and Prince Won are also harboring special connections with Mu-deok.
“Once we got what we wanted, we promised to part ways without looking back. The love that Maidservant Kim mentioned may have seeped in between us. But is nothing but a shell that I will leave behind once I hatch.”
Genius Jang Wook presents his study notes to his teacher who was perplexed about how fast he accomplished the task. Wook responds how the 12 masters who taught him at least helped him since he has gone through the books 12 times already.
Happy to escape Songrim to go home since the agreement was for him to finish basic education, Master Park makes a new stipulation of him “knowing what he memorized by heart.”
He hands a book for him to read and Wook fails to see Dang-gu’s warning not to agree. It was indeed a trap! As the book requires magic for a mage to see what is written on it.
While Yul and Dang-gu wonder why Master Park gave such an arduous task to a rookie mage, the latter confessed to Master Heo that he does not have the intention to train Wook, but keep him close so he can watch him. He also intends to lure Jang Gang whose greatest fear is for Wook’s energy to be opened.
Yun-ok pays a visit to Wook and agrees to his request to cover for him before fleeing his study room.
Yul, on the other hand, pays Mu-deok a visit to check on her and demands a new umbrella she has to buy since she broke the one, he lent her.
“There was a friend who used to wait for me in Danhyanggok. She saved me and treated my wound. My leg was not healed properly probably because I was not able to thank her.”
Being fussy about the quality of umbrella Mu-deok should buy for him, Yul explained how he only has one umbrella since he does not go out when it rains because of his weak leg.
Knowing what he’s talking about since she mended his leg when they were young, Mu-deok listened to his thoughts about the friend he owed a lot when he was young.
When she was about to pay for the umbrella, Yul insists on not putting it on Wook’s tab but on her own money. Beaming when she relented, he happily accepts the umbrella as her gift.
Unknown to Mu-deok, her master arrived in the house. Also, Mu-deok’s seemingly evil hometown friend appears to have caused a few ruckuses. Cornered by a gang, Yul, fortunately, saved her while pretending to be blind. But she was hit by someone and taken somewhere.
Meanwhile, Dang-gu and Cho-yeon struggle to find a way to publicize their engagement cancellation. He agrees to wait until the magic show that she so wanted to see.
“Wait for me there. I will go to you soon.”
Contemplating on taking the exam for servants at Songrim, Mu-deok weighs her options. Just then, the servant from the house informs him that Wook is home, so she rushes to where he is.
However, Wook has to go back before sundown so he goes back without seeing Mu-deok. She luckily catches up on where he is and promises that she will enter Songrim soon.
On his way back, Wook meets Prince Won and they engage in cute bickering. Lucky for Wook, the prince even coached him to his route so he won’t get caught.
In time for his teacher’s checking, Yun-ok was able to protect Wook’s sneaking out.
Learning Mu-deok’s intention to enter the servant’s open house application at Songrim, Maidservant Park tried to get a spot for her but failed miserably.
Seeing Wook struggle in figuring out the book he was assigned to read, Master Lee offered to help if he will drink the chaste herb tea. Tempted to take the offer, he goes back to reality. Good thing Master Lee tips him on how the book is actually a love letter.
Instead of training to concentrate, he advises him to take it as how love letters are supposed to be read since Songrim’s founder writes the book for a blind woman who can only see through her heart.
“No matter how pathetic you feel, you must do what you can at the moment. If I’m not willing to do anything, I might as well just die.”
It’s D-DAY for Songrim’s Servant Contest. Yul figures Mu-deok will enter the contest just as Wook’s assigned teacher also shares his servant is joining the servant competition.
Finding a united goal to help out Mu-deok, Prince Won, Dang-gu and Yul sit to analyze the test questions. Cracking their three impossibly cute brains out, they answered simple questions.
But their next hurdle is how to bring the answered exam to Mu-deok discreetly. Who else is capable of doing it but the crown prince! Inevitably, Mu-deok passed the first exam.
She also nailed the practical exams. But the last one challenges the physical ability of the applicant, which Mu-deok lacks.
Still stuck trying to decipher the book with invisible writing, Wook asked Master Park the name of the first Jinyowon leader.
Through Master Lee’s tip and Master Park’s revelation of Jinyowon’s leader, Wook finally reads the book. Simultaneously writing it on the paper, the very words describe the connection he shared with Mu-deok who is putting all her strength to win the stamina race so she can enter Songrim.
From afar, Prince Won, Yul and Dang-gu show worried looks if she can enter the best five finishers of the race.
Handing the written poem to his teacher, Wook heads out. At that same moment, Mu-deok is on the brink of losing the race. Summoning her last ounce of strength, she overtook the man in 5th place and seals the spot.
“I should have braced myself before letting him get this close to me. What I gave him should not have been read or delivered in the first place. It was my foolish and pathetic love letter.”
Learning Wook has read the book he assigned; Master Park contemplates the baffling situation. When he heard Wook is tending his maid, a thought came to his mind of how Mu-deok is always by Wook’s side.
Wook shares the book he decoded but Mu-deok thinks it was a pitiful love letter for not being sent out. She thinks Songrim’s founder is a coward to have written his feelings without the recipient knowing about it.
Agreeing with what she said, Wook teases her that she should have also delivered her letter in person. Appreciating the efforts, she did to enter Songrim, Wook promises to do the same for her as his master.
Confronting what she wrote in the letter, Wook asked if she wants his reply to her letter which means “I will go this far just to see you and I can do anything if it means being able to see you.”
Nervous to hear his reply, Mu-deok hears him say that he missed her, too.
Alchemy of Souls Episode 10 Musings
Another solid episode for Alchemy of Souls which has been stable in presenting jam-packed stories in each chapter every week. We thought nothing would top the three handsome idiots answering the test question scene. But the ending love letter scene was just as perfect.
What I like about this series is how I’m enjoying its creative and fan service value each week. It does not tone down with unveiling those small clues that would manifest importance when the climactic moments proceed.
Maidservant Kim has to notch up the romance going on between her and Master Park. If he gets busy maybe he can let Wook decide on his own destiny.
Either that or Master Lee stir up trouble so they would all focus on their love stories. *chuckles Anyway, Mu-deok’s possible identity as Bu-yeon gets stronger with the information we got from her hometown friend. I think she will end up in the hands of Jin Mu who would use her for the trouble he’s brewing with the queen.
Based on the episode 11 preview, romance is finally happening and we couldn’t find fault in how lyrical the development of the love story is. Consider your forewarned as well since we see the love triangle also shaping up with clarity. Who knows, Prince Won will also wage his intention.
Hong sisters did a great job in capturing a subdued declaration of emotions that will burst into a squeal-fest for the viewers come next episode.
Are we going to see romance finally blossom next week?
Witness an energizing and magical story in Alchemy of Souls every Saturday and Sunday. International fans can watch it on Netflix.
