Alchemy of Souls Episode 9 Highlights
Last episode, Jang Wook made an impressive feat by conquering Prince Won at their duel.
His achievement spurs the four families to offer him a place to train him formally as a mage. Ultimately, he chose to be trained by Master Park.
“The uniform does look good on Yul and Dang-gu. But it is especially impeccable on my student.”
It’s D-Day to Wook’s mage investiture program. Master Park presides over the ceremony giving him the robe, guide book and plaque access to Songrim’s Jeongjingak.
Maidservant Kim together with Wook presents the mage mementos to Madam Do-hwa. When Wook asked Mu-deok how he looks, she replies utterly cool making him give her an embrace. He also shares the hangover pill Master Heo gave to him and overlooks Maidservant Kim waiting for a share of it.
Following his official entry to becoming a mage, a welcome party with limitless liquor was thrown by Jang family at the gisaeng house.
Meanwhile, Jin Mu and the Queen convene to talk about the person in the prophecy with a king star.
Apparently, 10 years ago, it was Bu-yeon who found the ice stone. Jin Mu also ploys by bringing an impostor to pretend as her daughter so she will follow his bidding.
“I have always walked the right path. I never did anything wrong. But I have gone astray.”
The party goes on but outside Yul wallows in the memory of Naksu and his predicament over keeping her secret.
Mu-deok finds him outside unable to find his way back inside because he’s tipsy. Relaying his concern in cryptic words, Mu-deok does not know that Yul is protecting her in his own way.
Holding her hand, he confessed not knowing where to go. She replies to follow her so she can lead him.
When she asked about what the illusion of her told him, he responds that the illusion said she loves him. Surprised to hear that, Yul asserts how it has always been true, so Mu-deok just relents.
Meanwhile, Prince Won crashes the party and brings in some jar of liquors. Trust Mu-deok to know how to dispel the negative mood and put the narcissistic prince comfy, through her coaxing the party goes back to its happy normal mood.
“It was very wise of you to hide the petty emotions you felt.”
Following the prince who knows Mu-deok will do the very same act, he listens to her praises of him being generous. He tells her that he can only be petty when he’s with her.
Confessing his generosity is only because of her, Mu-deok made him feel good by presenting the sachet he gifted her which Wook previously said was hanging out to ward off flies. Prince Won ultimately felt much better when she asked about his body after Wook’s attack.
Entering Jeongjingak means Mu-deok can’t be with her master anymore, at least after the basic training. It made her lose her mind out of worry and being used to being by his side.
Meanwhile, Wook who drank like a fish was sent to Master Heo’s clinic for his breathing irregularity. The young lady he previously rescued from Kil-ju is apparently Master Heo’s granddaughter, Yun-ok. He also leaves her with Wook giving her an opportunity to take care of him.
Outside the gates, Mu-deok refuses to go home albeit with the pouring rain. In his sleep, Wook looks for Mu-deok, but Yun-ok gives him the warmth he needed.
“Jang Wook, if you abandon me. I promise I will kill you.”
At that same moment, Mu-deok who is drenched from the rain, vows to kill Wook if he ever abandons her. Just then, the rain stops dropping on Mu-deok as an umbrella held by Yul sheds her.
He convinces her to stop her stubbornness as it will put the efforts Wook gave to enter Songrim as a mage useless. Realizing what he said made sense, she refused to take the hand he offered and asks him to tell her master that she will find ways to enter Songrim. Yul agrees and when she moves to go home, he follows quickly and forces the umbrella into her hand.
The next day, Wook wakes up looking for Mu-deok and sees Yun-ok’s maid offering him a drink. Realizing Yun-ok might disclose his encounter with Kil-ju, he sought her right away which made the elders in the pavilion happy.
Except for Master Park who is adorably clueless about matters of heart, Master Heo and Maidservant Kim think something romantic brews between Wook and Yun-ok.
Hearing Wook’s request to keep the secret about him protecting her from the soul shifter, Yun-ok agrees out of gratitude for helping her.
“Not a single mage was given the right to bring in their own personal servant.”
Learning about the rule of not being able to bring personal servants in Jeongjingak, Wook tries to appeal to Master Park on the basis of how he was prohibited to study magic for a long while.
Master Park thinks that Wook’s insisting is due to a secret master teaching him. He also explains how people have been talking about his recent feats which made Wook decide to prioritize Mu-deok’s safety.
Acquiescing to the rule, he makes an excuse how it took almost all his life to enter the school only to be kicked out because of his servant. On the other hand, Mu-deok is doing everything she can to get a plaque so she can enter Songrim.
When Maidservant Kim checks on Wook, he refuses to be taken care of to follow the rules. He only requests to take care of Mu-deok but Maidservant Kim reasons how his maid would be happy to get a rest knowing how fussy he is with almost everything.
Without luck in finding a way to enter Songrim, Mu-deok goes home and sees Maidservant Kim. She tells her Wook wants her to rest, eat good food and see the flowers.
Feeling despondent to the thought that Wook might be discarding her soon, her mood lightens up hearing Maidservant Kim blab about the woman Wook wants to protect.
She realizes Wook’s faithfulness, just as Wook struggles to study missing her as well.
Alchemy of Souls Episode 9 Musings
Will absence make Wook and Mudeok’s hearts grow fonder in Alchemy of Souls?
Advancing to the second half of the story, more answers are set to unravel. Mu-deok’s hometown friend, in particular, may hold the key to the true identity of Bu-yeon.
The search for Bu-yeon spirals into the idea of the camp that will be taking advantage once her true identity is out in the open. We learned from this episode how she is like a human tracker of great power, thus, she was able to locate the ice stone, 10 years ago.
Presented clues so far point to Mu-deok as the missing Bu-yeon. If we would go to that theory, that could be the reason why Naksu merged with Mu-deok’s frail body since she can attract great energy.
Definitely, too early to make conclusions, but the details aligned so far are synching well. These makes the moves of the villains worth anticipating.
Waiting for the clear romance lines to develop among the young generation of Daeho mages is being cushioned well by the middle-aged romance between Maidservant Kim and Master Park.
But we see this episode again the balanced waging of silent and unrealized affectionate treatment by Wook, Prince Won and Yul with Mu-deok.
Witness an energizing and magical story in Alchemy of Souls every Saturday and Sunday. International fans can watch it on Netflix.
