Happiness Episode 09 Key Moments (*Spoiler Alert)

“They’re not bad people. They’re just afraid.”

Forced to relent to ajumma Yeong-ok’s demand, Sae-bom and Yi-hyun agree to be quarantined inside their unit. Finding Oh Ju-hyung bent to find NEXT pills, Yi-hyun listened to him blab how he needs one for survival. The crazy villain thinks it will help him if hell breaks loose inside the building.

Outside the unit, the residents and trapped service people are huddled by Yeong-ok. Unable to restrain herself, Sae-bom advises them to hold the meeting inside the pretentious building representative wanna-be. Yi-hyun tries to calm his wife who is keen to reveal the poor woman’s real front and greedy nature.

Continuing their meeting, they propose getting the stored water of the couple and distributing it evenly among residents. Back at the couple’s home, Yi-hyun educates Seo-yoon not to hold grudges on the residents. But he warns her not to go near Oh Ju-hyung and to always ignore him.

“I’m not worried about Sae-bom, but the other residents.”

The cleaning crew’s hired person goes up to spill the ludicrous plan of the residents. Learning about it, Sae-bom reached her tipping point and marches to where the tenants convened.

Armed with a kitchen knife, she kicked Ju-hyung and took Detective Kim’s gun against the latter’s plea to calm down. At a gunpoint, Sae-bom scares Ju-hyung and proposes to look for the real infected people by using human blood.

On the brink of cutting her palm, Yi-hyun arrives to do the deed valiantly. With blood dripping from his hand, he goes to each of the people inside. Suddenly, Bo-ram reacts showing the symptoms of the disease. The married friends subdue her while the residents got shocked at what they saw.

Sae-bom questions Bo-ram and informs her that she won’t transform right away after her last episode. Confessing she got scratched from the grocery store, she lied afraid of not being able to enter the building.

Confirming Bo-ram didn’t throw the bloodied clothes, Sae-bom deduced other infected people in hiding. True to what she inferred, Yeon-ok’s pastor husband appears to be also tainted.

“I don’t feel good now that you’re hurt.”

Unhappy about her wounded husband breaking his promise to stay home, Yi-hyun makes nonsense excuses. Ultimately, she drags him back to their place to treat his wound, but was halted by the sight of Detective Kim who apologized for being gullible.

Sae-bom stops him and tells him to share his worries in the future and not to stab their backs. They all go inside so they can treat Yi-hyun’s hand.

Trying to appease his worried wife, Sae-bom went on to clean Yi-hyun’s wound. She gripes on having a sour mood because of him being hurt. He responds feeling worried for her sake so he insists she can’t do things like that and will always take charge.

The next day, a meeting was again held and offering blood to check for infected-in-disguise opened it. Proceeding to discuss the cost of the supplies held by the cleaning service crew.

Yi-hyun and Sae-bom carry on with providing food and drink for the infected people. They also both deduce another person who might have been infected.

Happiness

“The virus goal is to spread it. So they stop drinking their blood if they think they’re infected.”

Outside the apartment complex, Ji-soo reports to Han Tae-seok about a mutation of the virus with an infected having the ability to control their transformation and even suppress the bloodthirst. It poses another concern for the disease which doesn’t even have a cure yet.

He orders Ji-soo to conduct blood tests from the people inside Building 101 as it is the perfect venue to check on virus mutation.

Karma moves fast for building representative ajumma. Diligently tracing probable infected people in hiding, she brings the cup of blood inside their house. Unaware that her husband is infected, she gets the surprise of her life when she sees her husband’s blood-covered lips.

The pastor explains he got the pills from Seung-beom and tried hard to ignore the bloodthirst. His wife who still thinks of her greedy plans coaxes him not to reveal his situation since it will impact her status of aspiring to become a resident representative.

Sensing the approaching people, Pastor Woo-chang uses the stairs to go down as Yi-hyun checks the unit looking for Yeon-ok’s husband. The pastor reaches the 6th floor chasing after Ju-hyung who entered his unit totally disregarding his mistress having an intimate moment with Lawyer Kook.

Coming to their rescue, Sae-bom tries to subdue the pastor to no avail. Yi-hyun arrives and uses his blood to lure the pastor. Together, they were able to upend the raging infected pastor.

“I’m the human form of vitamins and antibiotics.”

Unfortunately, the newlyweds were not aware that Ju-hyung was hiding inside his house. Just when Yi-hyun chides Yeon-ok if her opinion about infected people changed, Ju-hyung removes the clothing covering the pastor.

Using himself as bait, the pastor runs amok in his direction and falls outside the building. In grief, Oh Yeon-ok blames it on the married friends.

Sae-bom finds herself treating Yi-hyun’s wound again. They talk about the misfortune of the pastor and both agree they have done what they can. He explains how hard it would have been for him to confide when Sae-bom expressed disappointment for the pastor’s decision to hide it. He also adds how worrying it was for him to have his closest person avoid him.

Back at her unit, Yeon-ok mulls over her situation. She agonizingly peeks at her husband’s lifeless body lying on the cold ground outside.

“Should we share our water too? I guess we can manage, but what about Seo-yoon?”

Another day breaks with Yi-hyun and Sae-bom finding the cleaning crew on their doorstep asking for some water. Acting as negotiators, Yi-hyun and Sae-bom relay the situation to the penthouse guy with an abundant supply of everything.

He tips them on triggering electricity for a short period of time to get some water. However, the sound might invite the infected people outside. He also agrees to share some of his supplies to spare.

Meanwhile, Ji-soo presses Han Tae-seok to choose between his wife and unborn child. A ray of hope is shown on his face when she told him that Sae-bom’s blood has the antibodies for the cure they needed. Following his wife’s request, he saves his child who is presumed to have been infected.

Left alone in their place, Yi-hyun checks himself on the mirror. It turns out he was bitten by the pastor.

Happiness Episode 9 Musings

Thrill, comedy and romance have been blending well in Happiness. Adding bad kismet in the mix to the annoying villain viewers all want to suffer, makes this episode utterly hoorah-worthy.

However, the plot intensifies with this episode’s cliffhanger on Yi-hyun’s situation. On a hopeful side, Sae-bom could save him from his predicament.

We can now understand the meaningful words he told his wife about the pastor’s actions because those are the very same thing he wants to express himself.

While writing this recap, I’m already preparing my heart for the subsequent episodes, to be honest. May Sae-bom’s blood and love save the hero of Happiness.

Happiness

Now, that the plot takes on a more compelling note, the riveting scenarios expect to escalate. Without Yi-hyun in the future chapters, and with the most stubborn residents ever, chaos is definitely brewing. We’re not even mentioning the side love affairs and the still unraveled situation of Dong-hyun’s mom.

Aside from establishing a rule of how an infected person only targets the non-infected ones, this episode raises the conflict resolution drive. More so, because a feasible cure is in the pipeline.
