Island Part 2

Island Episodes 9 and 10 Highlights

Previously, Mi-ho decides to undergo training so she can awaken her inner Wonjeong.

Alone at the training site, Gungtan appears ready to attack her. From Grandma Geum’s place, they sense his presence, so Van and Johan rush to her aid.

But before he can make his strike, Mi-ho’s power emerge and so is the glimpse of her memory of looking at Gungtan on that ill-fated day she was killed.

Yeom-ji and Gung-tan’s backstory also unfolds. The latter rescues her when she was young against her evil father.

Thereafter, he sent her to Granny Geum to get information from her furtively.

“Take back your affection if you had already given it to her.”

Out of frustration for still being fearful of Wonjeong, Gungtan unleashes a lust monster called Gusunsae that feeds on human guilt and triggers a human to commit suicide. It also made Grandma Geum fall ill.

When Van visits her, she reminds him that time is important for Mi-ho’s mission and asks him to restrain the affection he has been nurturing for her.

Ultimately, Gung-tan’s intention is to trigger the already piling guilt of Mi-ho who has been blaming herself for the recent deaths. Su-ryeon, Yeom-ji’s friend she rescued was pushed by the lust demon to commit suicide aggravating Mi-ho’s heart.

Johan and Van work together to protect the students possessed by Gusunsae. However, Mi-ho’s situation is not looking good as her guilt meter is almost on the threshold.

“It’s not too late to admit that you are scared of her. Isn’t it the reason why you are sending lust demons than killing her with your own hands? How did it feel when Wonjeong sealed you?”

Van and Gungtan meet at the prison they were held when they were young and training as demon hunters. Exchanging cold remarks, Van brings up the truth that Gungtan has been sending demons because of the fear he has for Wonjeong.

Remembering the nothingness and emotionless feeling he had when he was sealed, he tells Van that he will also end up in that place because his blood is the same as his – half-human-half-demon.

The elusive Gusunsae makes Van work hard so he assigns Johan to care for Mi-ho. Gungtan makes a simultaneous attack on Johan and Mi-ho. Through the lust demon, she gets a tip of how Butler Jang can’t be trusted.

Inevitably, Butler Jang reveals his identity as Father Peter who is the only surviving priest from the group given a mission to protect Tamra from lust demons. He also confesses how it has since been his mission to protect her.

Mi-ho, who can’t take all the revelations and pressure any more orders Butler Jang to leave. Just then, Van arrives to slay the Gusunsae feeding doubts on Mi-ho, but the monster escapes. Through Johan’s help, Van finally subdued the monster.

Knowing he has done his part on his mission for Mi-ho, Butler Jang entrusts Mi-ho to Johan.

“You’ve waited a long time alone, right? That promise, I’m sorry.”

Searching for Mi-ho, he finds her about to kill herself. He reaches for her but on Mi-ho’s end what she sees is Wonjeong, and memories of her came rushing one by one. Alone in Mi-ho’s room, she pours out her frustrations and emotions feeling sorry for Van and herself.

Weeping, she apologizes to Van for not being able to keep Wonjeong’s promise and destined task. Unaware that Gungtan is there with them inside the room, he makes an attack that was stopped on time by Van.

The two estranged brothers engage in a fight where Van is at an extreme disadvantage owing to Gungtan’s stronger power. Making a futile attempt, Van misses the dagger he throws at him. Using the same dagger, he points it to Mi-ho. Suddenly, bright light from her body emerged hitting Gungtan, but Van took the dagger meant for Mi-ho and they fall down from the balcony to the nearby sea.

Fortunately, Van survives the fatal wound and regains his consciousness at the sight of a worried Mi-ho. Back in their friendly state, they chat casually as Mi-ho proposes they renew their contract. She wants Van to protect her who is special and beautiful, but gets a response that he’s not the one who’s gone crazy but her.

Mi-ho lays her head on his shoulder and mumbles for them to just stay like that for a while.

Back at Gungtan’s lair, his frustration from not being able to kill Mi-ho reaches sky-high that when he heard the cry of a baby in the congregation he leads, he mercilessly kills the mother of the baby to the surprise of his followers. Yeomji runs to get the baby from the mother who was killed while Gungtan runs amok and kills anybody within his reach.

Island

Island Episodes 9 and 10 Musings

From its humble first part, Island sprints to an exciting second part with the recent plot developments that unfurled in the last four episodes.

Gung-tan’s trauma when he was sent to the pits of the earth, sealed by Wonjeong, answers why he initially made a deal with Van so he can kill her; and why he keeps sending the lust demons for that intention.

Yeom-ji’s backstory answers how she connected with Gungtan and we hope that something good in her would arise to recognize that even her closeness to him might not guarantee her survival.

Much as we want romance to blossom between Van and Mi-ho; they have a handful of tasks to do and a raging villain to conquer. Time is of the essence and Van’s depleting power has to be used wisely.

We can’t confirm yet if Mi-ho also regained her power during that burst of wanting to protect Van from Gungtan scene.

Ahead of the finale week that we don’t have a preview, we can expect a mind-blowing ending given how the thrill exponentially escalates from the kickoff episode of Island Part 2.

Adding to that, the group that was introduced in the opening week still needs elaboration. So, we can look forward to more of them as the narrative winds down.

Will Yeom-ji be spared from Gungtan’s uncontrollable outrage? Will Butler Jang return? What will be Johan’s part in the approaching closure of the series?

Watch Mi-ho, Van and Johan overcome the villains trying to destroy the world in Island Part 2!
