Island

Island Episodes 3 and 4 Highlights

Previously in Island, heiress Won Mi-ho ends up going to Jeju Island to make some reflection after a viral scandal of her assaulting a man caused trouble for the company.

But as soon as she arrived on the island, she became a monster magnet. Thankfully, a mysterious man named Van protected her. She then offered him a job to become her bodyguard, to which he strangely acquiesced.

Proceeding to her mission to make her image brighter, Mi-ho forcedly goes to school and finds her bodyguard already sitting in the backseat of the car.

She also introduces Van to Butler Jang who previously met the half-demon-half-human lust monster hunter when he was a young priest.

Later, Johan also meets Mi-ho and even had a wine-drinking session together. While he proudly declares receiving love from God, she remarks receiving love from ghosts.

“Humans tend to try to know everything because they are afraid of the unknown.”

Inevitably, Johan also meets Van and as expected the exorcist and half-demon exchange not-so-warm words. The two join Mi-ho at school, but en route to the school where Mi-ho is teaching, Van asked to be dropped off sensing some tasks he needs to do.

Yeom-ji, Grandma Geum’s granddaughter, desperately pleads for Mi-ho to help her friend Suryeon. She already asked her previously but Mi-ho refused. Relaying how she told her friend who seems to be in a rabbit hole being abused by her boyfriend to visit a tree and plead to a spirit named Benjulle, things went awry for her even more.

Yeom-ji learned that Benjulle would grant someone’s earnest wish from her grandmother. Wanting to help her friend, she gave that suggestion. But it made the situation worse.

Mi-ho and Johan introduce themselves to Suryeon’s parents, it turns out that after Suryeon went to a sacred tree where Benjulle’s spirit can be summoned, she ended up being possessed. Johan tries to defeat the demon possessing her but they end up going to a different dimension.

On the cusp of being endangered, Van appears to save Miho. However, the monster tree is easily subduing the three. Miho gets the chance to convince Suryeon to snap out of her revenge. But because she offered her body in exchange for her plea, the spirit continues its attack.

Almost fatally harming Miho and Suryeon, Van transforms into his demon form to defeat the spirit. Later, when Miho wakes up, she learns from Van that lust monsters were behind Suryeon’s plight with the goal to get her.

“There is no conclusion that would make everyone happy.”

Paying Grandma Geum a visit, Van affirms the presence of Wonjeong through Miho. Johan who also speaks with his mentor is reminded that his mission is to awaken Miho as she is the only person who can establish the protective barrier as instructed by the prophecy.

Fulfilling her promise to Su-ryeon, Miho moves to obtain evidence to prosecute Su-ryeon’s evil ex-boyfriend. However, the law of the land can only provide a three-year punishment for all the abuse he has made.

So, Van silently meddles and visits Benjulle’s spirit to formally provide Su-ryeon’s request. The remorseless culprit who is about to expose all of Su-ryeon’s photos faces his demise when the real Benjulle showed up to kill him. Mi-ho heaves a sigh of relief knowing that Van does not have anything to do with it.

Wanting to know Van’s identity, Johan set up a trap to subdue Van while fighting with him. However, his lust demon self gets triggered just as Mi-ho discovers they are battling.

Rushing to attack Miho, a memory from the past resurfaced showing Van striking Wonjeong with his knife.

Island Episodes 3 and 4 Musings

Johan’s mission to awaken and protect Mi-ho might have something to do with why he made a bold move to hold his ground against Van. As the latest episode reveals, the prophecy was again highlighted and we get details that Miho appears to be an important savior.

What viewers might be itchy to know about is why Van killed Wonjeong in the past and why he agrees to protect her at present. While we understand withholding details, especially in supernatural stories involving a prophecy, there are really noticeable gaps in the placement of the information in Island that gets confusing and messy sometimes.

Thankfully, the CGI effects are less subdued in the fight scene between Van and Johan which made that moment entrancing to watch.

The saving grace is how perceivable the chemistry of the lead cast is so far. Fortunately, Miho can quickly and smartly grasp her situation. Ergo, we won’t be waiting that long to get the truth about what happened between Van and Wonjeong in the past.

As seen in the premiere week, it was even hinted how the two have created a special bond. So, it is really one of the points to watch as the story unfolds. The fact that Grandma Geum is close to Van means there’s a reason yet to be unveiled which propelled Van to kill Wonjeong in the past.

Another confrontation to anticipate is between Van and Gung-tan who has been creating trouble from the sidelines without revealing himself in the open yet.

Will Van stop on time before he fatally hurt Miho? Can Johan and Van find a way to coexist while protecting Miho?
