Island Part 2

Island Part 2 Opening Week Story

Following the events after Johan’s brother’s death and a peek at Gungtan, his lair, and his unexpected allies; Island Part 2 went down memory lane to reveal the backstory of Van, Gungtan, and Wonjeong.

After young Van and young Gungtan were selected as lust demon slayers; they go for extreme physical training. Young Wonjeong cares for the two and frequently visits their cell to bring food.

Unable to bear the situation of the two, Wonjeong plots to have them escape, however, it did not push through. She got accidentally wounded, and Van goes back to bring her to the temple.

When she regains consciousness, realizing she needs to work hard to create the barrier for her goal to protect Van and Gungtan, Wonjeong persevered.

A few years later, when she’s all set to create the barrier, she visits the two again to relay a promise that she will help them get the liberation they deserve.

“I promise I will save you again.”

On the day Wonjeong sets forth to create the barrier, Van and Gungtan were brought to a room where Jongryeong, the monk leader, would purify their souls.

Unfortunately, Gungtan’s initial reservation about them being obliterated along with all the lust demons really happened. Furious, they escape confinement and kill all the people present.

Van head to where Wonjeong is trying to seal the barrier, followed by Gungtan. Still believing she is innocent, Van protects Wonjeong but in the process of trying to stab Gungtan, he accidentally killed Wonjeong because Gungtan used her to shield him.

It was also revealed how Gungtan joined a group that aims for Wonjeong’s life. The leader of the group has also immense power that easily subdued Gungtan.

“Sometimes you can only see things when you believe.”

Determined to protect her people, Mi-ho proceeds to train so she can be worthy and strong enough to create the barrier.

Under Grandma Geum’s supervision, she was accompanied by Van and Johan. The latter took time to mend his broken heart after his brother’s death and is determined to become Mi-ho’s protector.

He was warned by Van that he would endanger Mi-ho if he insists on protecting her because he is human and bound by limitations. True to what Van assessed, Johan struggles to differentiate the good and evil after going through a painful experience because of his brother.

It’s no easy task, but Mi-ho is keen to brave her choice in training to bring out Wonjeong’s soul inside her.

While training, Gungtan appears in front of Mi-ho who has yet to retrieve Wonjeong’s memory and power.

Island Part 2 Opening Week Musings

It was an illuminating opening week from Island Part 2, and it’s commendable how the story answered the pending questions right away.

By doing so, grasping the series’ direction has become easier owing to the unfurling of the misunderstanding of why Van killed Wonjeong.

While Gungtan has valid reasons why he has quenchless fury, his choice to do merciless killings is also a legit reason why he should not be tolerated.

Correspondingly, as explanations for the strained relationships of Wonjeong, Van, and Gungtan were detailed; the series introduced another villain that is yet to be explored.

Considering the drama has four episodes left, expect a spree of plot twists to be incorporated. Johan’s role in the prophecy is another reserved for further delving into the remaining episodes.

Gungtan’s unexpected crashing on Mi-ho’s training might be a blessing as it can speed up Mi-ho’s awakening. We’ll see if it does next week.

Watch Mi-ho, Van and Johan overcome the villains trying to destroy the world in Island Part 2!
