Kim Soo Hyun Braves Prison Life, Ends Lawyer Service of Cha Seung Won In “One Ordinary Day” Episodes 3 & 4

One Ordinary Day

With Hyun-soo consistently picking disappointing choices in One Ordinary Day, it’s really a driving point to witness how he can win his case.

Sustaining quite a challenging detention life, he meets good and bad people. His case also gets the attention of a prominent lawyer making his parents decide to relieve Lawyer Shin as Hyun-soo’s lawyer.

One Ordinary Day Episodes 3 & 4 Key Moments

Hyun-soo enters the detention center while waiting for his trial to proceed. Lawyer Shin briefs his parents about the cost of his professional service. He checks on his client every now and then while working on the case.

Unknown to him, a big shot lawyer has taken interest in Hyun-soo’s case. Lawyer Park directs her junior and assistant to reach out to Hyun-soo’s parents about her plan to help their child free of charge. When Lawyer Shin visits him with small presents and an ATM card for his expenses, he guiltily relayed his change of lawyer.

At the prison, Hyun-soo’s mettle is put to a test with various troubles raised by newly-met inmates. It also does not help that the prosecution and police chief handling the Chrysanthemum case are conniving to push him to the edge.

Through the help of Chief Park, Prosecutor Ahn meets Hyun-soo pressuring him to go for a polygraph test. Chief Park also backs up the prosecutor luring Hyun-soo of how public sentiment can be raised, thereby helping him and his parents in the process.

The Polygraph Test

But Prosecutor Ahn and Chief Park made arrangements to make the result of the test favor their stand by agitating Hyun-soo’s mental state. Lawyer Seo who sensed something odd tries to reach Lawyer Park. Lawyer Shin invites himself and sees the evil ploy the prosecution and Chief Park have been concocting.

Teaching Lawyer Seo that asthmatic patients cannot do the lie-detector test, she takes Lawyer Shin’s lead to stop the polygraph test.

Hyun-soo’s Review of Legal Confinement

While Hyun-soo sets forth for his trial, Lawyer Shin goes to the clinic that prescribed fentanyl (synthetic opioid) to victim Hong Guk-hwa. Through his devious manipulation, he gets hold of pertinent information about the victim.

At the review trial, Lawyer Park highlights the physical abuse her client is enduring at the detention center for a crime that is still not proven to be his. But Prosecutor Ahn turned the tables that the bruises came from his attempted escape of the prison. She withheld the fact that the cause was his panic attack after his cellmate committed suicide. Hyun-soo, unfortunately, was not able to explain his side.

Meanwhile, Lawyer Shin uses the medical records he got to cut a deal with Lawyer Seo. When she presents it to Lawyer Park, she was asked to book a meeting with Prosecutor Ahn right away.

Ruling out Hyun-soo’s continuous detention, he goes back alone to the detention facility where he was welcomed with a cut from one of the crazy jailbirds. He was helped by boss inmate Do Ji-tae nurse the cut he got. He also gives him a pep talk that his fate as a prisoner has no uncertainty. Instead, he should focus to survive as a jailbird.

Lawyer Park’s Negotiation

Using the victim’s medical records, Lawyer Park negotiates with Prosecutor Ahn a 10-year jail time sentence for his client under involuntary manslaughter. She cites precedent cases which makes her offer irresistible. Demanding a confession from Hyun-soo, Lawyer Park acquiesces.

Lawyer Park proceeds to meet Hyun-soo to explain the best result he can get with piles of evidence on his case. Coaxing him to agree, he shows resistance citing he cannot agree to something he didn’t do. Lawyer Seo meets Lawyer Shin to give the money for the medical records. She also mentions how the case will progress with Hyun-soo’s forthcoming confession.

Unhappy to learn about Prosecutor Ahn and Lawyer Park’s agreement, Chief Park expressed disdain as he is fully convinced that Hyun-soo deserves a life sentence.

Hyun-soo’s Plea Bargain

Despite feeling bothered about confessing to a deed he did not commit, people around Hyun-soo are all saying the plea bargain for his case is his best option. Lawyer Shin sneaks a chat with Hyun-soo through Lawyer Seo. He gives him a pep talk of how Lawyer Park’s settlement makes sense. However, his ex-con tag will forever haunt him.

At the trial, Lawyer Park takes charge in answering for Hyun-soo to not mess up the agreement in place. However, Hyun-soo refuses to confess to the crime.

One Ordinary Day Episodes 3 & 4 Musings

Since last week, I was hoping for one clever and redeeming action by Hyun-soo before the series ends to make up for all the annoying decisions his weak and gullible character has made. Thankfully, he did one today. His indecisive character makes the story unpredictable since the narrative revolves around his character.

For this, Kim Soo Hyun is really nailing his character well, portrayal-wise. His vulnerability mixed with cluelessness can make any viewer feel annoyed but worried about him at the same time.

One Ordinary Day has set its trajectory clear since day 1. That is unraveling the truth about “that night” and proving Hyun-soo’s integrity in the process. The neat portrayals help in the hook factor immensely. Because honestly, the narrative lacks a thrilling drive.

Given Lawyer Park’s character, she would most likely give up on the case with a client unwilling to submit to her demands. Therefore, this would of course reunite Hyun-soo to the only person who believes in his innocence.

Lucky for us, the series does not have any other choice but take a quick pace route given its 8-episode run. Therefore expect more details to unfold in the penultimate week.
