Just when the captives at Hosu University dormitory thought they can successfully escape, Dr. Kang reveals her identity, halting their plan. She also triggered an explosion when one of the hostages moved after being told not to.

Snowdrop

“They have no intention of breaking in despite the explosion.”

Putting back the hostages and subduing Lee Gang-mu, Su-ho checks on Eung-cheol while Gyeok-chan closes the secret passage. Dr. Kang begins the inquisition on who the mastermind of the escape attempt and Young-ro volunteers to claim the deed.

It infuriates Dr. Kang and even more, but she holds back as Ms. Pi covers Young-ro. Su-ho finds the wounded Eung-cheol who appears to have lost his hearing.

Despite the explosion, Su-ho wonders why the South camp was not making a move. Director Eun goes to the scene to handle it personally albeit his son’s scheduled burial since Han Tae-il insists the situation is still manageable.

Angered by their actions, Su-ho declares no one will be released anymore. They can either survive or die, and all of them will be in it together.

While Han Tae-il speaks with Su-ho, the former learns of the reason why the explosion happened. Director Eun insists on releasing his daughter as Su-ho picks up on an “agreement” which seems to align with what Gang-mu previously informed.

“I, the ANSP director, guarantee your safe return. So, release my daughter right now.”

Demanding Su-ho to release his daughter, Director Eun got worked up because the North Korean spy won’t relent. Ordering his men to shoot Su-ho once he brings Young-ro to prove she’s safe, Han Tae-il reminds him to stay on the plan of dragging the hostage-taking situation for the election.

Bringing Su-ho to the spot where she can be shown alive to Director Eun, he warns her not to be stubborn and follow his words. But true to how defiant she is, she refuses to follow Su-ho. With Gyeok-chan getting instruction from Dr. Kang to shoot but not kill Young-ro in case she goes to her usual stubbornness.

Shouting to save them as she can’t trust anyone, Gyeok-chan shoots him which makes the South also fire their guns. Later, Gyeok-chan tells Dr. Kang that Young-ro tried to spill her identity. Thus, even when Su-ho tries to protect her, he wasn’t able to stop Dr. Kang from slapping Young-ro’s face.

Frantic about his daughter, Director Eun speaks with Su-ho demanding her release, but the response he got is his beloved daughter’s death if they will break-in. Director Eun and Han Tae-il continue their verbal spat while outside the dorm, the parents of the hostages are distraughtly demanding to see their children.

“But what kind of parent can live happily with money they got for their children’s death?”

Checking with Su-ho if the remaining 34 hostages are safe, Han Tae-il gets s response to bring a camcorder and have Jang Han-Na deliver it. Dr. Kang tends on his wound and reminds him to stick with the order of the Party. She also asked him to bring Ms. Pi and Lee Gang-mu to the basement with Young-ro.

Citing how their dead comrades lost their lives because of a political conspiracy that involves not their own country, Su-ho tells her how the parents of their deceased comrade won’t feel happy getting money in lieu of their children’s lives.

He expresses a strong desire to survive and go back to North Korea, thus he needs to get to the bottom of the deal between the two Koreas. That is for him to understand if the big money involved is worth the lives taken and the sacrifices.

Dr. Kang tells Su-ho how it took her 17 years to become Han Tae-il’s doctor but she was asked to safely escort them back to the North. Thus, he should have no doubt that they will be abandoned.

Through Gyeok-chan, Dr. Kang learns about Deputy Director Choi’s shoot-to-kill order on Su-ho in case he succumbs to committing treason. They also appoint Bun-ok to watch over the hostages.

Snowdrop

“My father has abandoned me.”

Back at the North Korea camp, Deputy Director Choi informs Director Lim of leaving his position. She also instructs Director Lim’s secretary to send a message to Su-ho of protecting the identity of Dr. Kang and killing all the hostages a day before the election.

Later, Director Eun also speaks with Deputy Director Choi about releasing his daughter. However, he was asked to send the agreement money in three days. It deviates from the initial agreement of giving it after the mission is over. The lives of the hostages are also put at stake in case the South camp won’t comply with the demand.

Receiving the newest order to kill the hostages a day before the election, Su-ho contemplates his situation. It turns out he is just an adopted son of Director Lim, thus, he can easily be let go.

The scene fades with Dr. Kang at a gunpoint of Lee Gang-mu who seems to have conspired with Su-ho.

Snowdrop Episode 10 Musings

While the North and South Korean camp leaders are on erratic verbal arrangements, discord keeps sowing among their agents. This episode marks the turning point on Su-ho’s conviction who can’t still reconcile why the Party can easily sacrifice their agents’ lives.

By now, viewers are used to oh-no cliffhangers in the series. With volatile characters, the thrill has kept our attention locked to the culminating part. Impressively, we can’t still predict what will happen since plot twists seem to be placed strategically in the narrative.

Now we also know Ms. Pi’s animosity towards ANSP is because of her painful experience being forced to serve the organization. Snowdrop does not only presents the ugly sides of the opposing agencies of the two Koreas, but the severity of conspiracies to innocent people and to those who really mean well their countries.

Tendering glimpses of how perilous and hard the lives of North Korean secret agents are, this episode somehow prepares us also to the possible heartbreaking moment down the wire for Su-ho. A character that we have learned to love, hate and appreciate.
