Lovers of the Red Sky Episode 5 Key Moments
“No one can add 10 thousand touches with just a single stroke. Once I gave up my greed, I could see flowers and the Moon.”
Escaping from the hands of Jung Seon Rye, Cheon Gi enters the Maejukheon Painting Contest together with Scholar Ha. He cheers up Cheon Gi’s spirits for the contest, and in turn, Cheon Gi expresses her gratitude for all the help she has received from him.
Jung and Young Wook catch up on Cheon Gi, and they worry for her because of Jung Seon Rye’s early release. Young Wook feels intimidated by the presence of other great painters in the contest. However, Cheon Gi keeps her head up and is positive about their chances of winning. She even recalls the lessons about strokes and empty spaces she has learned from her father.
“Even if she is that girl, our relationship was already once disconnected. I won’t let my petty feelings ruin my great plan.”
As Prince Joohyang is also present at the contest, Ha Ram acknowledges his presence. He even compliments the prince by stating that he is honored to sit next to him. After their pleasantries, Ha Ram overhears the prince’s bodyguard and remembers the sufferings he went through because of the orders of the royal family. While the contest is ongoing, Ha Ram convinces himself that he should rather focus on his revenge on the royal family.
“My hope and the reputation of my society are already damaged. If I were to go home not knowing the reason why I failed, I might despair and decide never to paint again.”
Noticing the butterflies at Cheon Gi’s painting, Prince Yangmyeong fails Cheon Gi at the first screening after realizing she is the painter of the fake painting sold to him. Despite the praises they have given to the painting, other judges also support the prince’s opinion on the painting.
Cheon Gi objects to her disqualification, and questions the reason for her result at the first screening. Even though she appears disrespectful, Cheon Gi remains firm on questioning the results.
“Those who are meant to pass will pass, and those meant to fail will fail.”
Han Geon moves forward and disagrees with the majority’s decision. He defends Cheon Gi by sharing his perceived motive of the painter in the painting. Butterflies suddenly appear and land on Cheon Gi’s painting. The event puts everyone in awe.
He recalls how Master Choi Won Ho told him to fail Hong Eun O’s daughter no matter what even though he does not know who she is. Han Geon uses his free pass stick after realizing that Cheon Gi has the blood of a blessed painter.
“Even if I once adored you, I am already a dead man.”
While cleaning their brushes, Cheon Gi overhears the gossip about her and Scholar Ha. The rainmaking ritual catches her attention as it is mentioned, and she becomes curious about the details on Scholar Ha. Prince Yangmyeong assigns Scholar Ha to give the theme on the second screening. The peach orchard is included in Scholar Ha’s given theme, and this leads Cheon Gi into realizing that Scholar Ha is Ha Ram.
Lovers of the Red Sky Episode 5 Musings
Ha Ram comes to rescue Cheon Gi, and as they walk together people’s attention is drawn to Scholar Ha. Even Prince Joohyang and his men recognize Scholar Ha’s credentials and abilities.
We see how Prince Joohyang looks at his own brother’s interaction with the crowd. It appears that there is a possibility that he feels threatened or wary of Prince Yangmyeong even though he is younger. He gets reminded that he should rather focus on Prince Yangmyeong’s motives. Nonetheless, we can perceive the size of his greed, given the possibility that he fearlessly harms his younger brother.
At the painting contest, lessons again on various painting methods are included. As a viewer, the information on the relevance of strokes and empty spaces brings meaning to old paintings. They may appear simple and monochrome, but in reality, it has great significance and a deep interpretation.
By the end of the episode, Cheon Gi comes close to realizing that Scholar Ha is Ha Ram. He wishes to focus on his revenge even though he has adored Cheon Gi before. We shall see how the two leads will interact in the next episodes given that they have recognized each other already.
The political struggle and Ha Ram’s plot of revenge shall also continue to progress, and we shall look forward to how it will unfold and intertwine with the series’ romance aspect.
