Opening Week Rating:

Call it Love

Call It Love Opening Week Story

Emotionally scarred by her parents’ divorce, Sim Woo-joo (Lee Sung Kyoung) carried that cross in the subsequent years of her life.

When she learned about her father’s death notice, she deliberately visits his wake wearing inappropriate clothing. Unleashing her bottled-up emotions, she also freely and disrespectfully spewed verbal assault on his father’s second wife, uncaring about the occasion.

Her fury at his father’s second wife escalates when she overheard her aunties talking about how the house, they live in was also sold by her. Bound by the law, and numbed from the continuous disappointments her father kept on giving, she packed up to leave the house with her siblings.

Thanks to her reliable friend Yoon Jun (Sung Joon); they found a place to stay. Learning about Han Dong-jin (Kim Young Kwang), the son of her father’s woman, Woo-joo plots a revenge plan that would hurt the woman she so abhors.

“I’m not interested in other people’s misfortune. I have my misfortune to worry about.”

She managed to secure a temporary job at Dong-jin’s trade fair business. While working, she’s also getting information about him. However, in one of her stalking, he spoiled her plan by revealing he knows he was being followed.

Following her gut feeling, Woo-joo returns to the office to get information from one of the assistant managers, in case it will be needed in the future. But her action results in her being framed as the spy. Apparently, the latest project of the company was leaked. The employee in the spotlight places the blame on her after getting information from an accidental witness who saw Woo-joo entered the building.

Dong-jin fires Woo-joo but she made sure to chide him for making such a decision owing to her disadvantageous situation. Later, Dong-jin finds out that the manager he trusted is the real culprit.

He asks Woo-joo to meet to inform him that he discovered the real culprit. While they were talking, a man rushes like a raging bull preparing to hit him. But Woo-joo stands up for Dong-jin and pushes the man to the ground.

Call It Love Opening Week Musings

Strangely engrossing, Call It Love carries a distinct emotion that can be appealing to viewers who have experienced difficulty forgiving someone who brought unimaginable pain. In the drama, it is extra heart-wrenching because Woo-joo’s agony is also someone who used to be dear in her heart.

Going in the direction of executing a revenge plan, the plot engrosses because her target is a tormented soul. Dong-jin proceeds to his routine life uncaring of others’ miseries because he has his own that he can barely manage. Thus, the expected situation between them would raise curiosity as to who is worth sympathizing with.

As hinted at the press conference, their connection heads to a seemingly destructive development if Woo-joo pushes through with her plan. Dong-jin leaves an impression of being selfless and also of his estranged relationship with his mother. Considering these points, he leans on being a willing revenge target.

We got glimpses of the other lead characters in the opening week. While their roles are yet to be explored, the overview of their personalities was detailed impressively.

Nevertheless, we can foresee how Jun’s character will function as the rational mind supporting his best friend. Hye-sung’s adorable blabs following another heartache suggests her part in bringing the comic and worth pondering lessons in the series. In addition, Min-young’s role in Dong-jin’s life raises intrigue.

Correspondingly, they are attuned to the so far superb screenplay. The lines in this drama linger efficiently matching its intention for healing moments.

Most notably, the commitment of Lee Sung Kyoung to portray an interesting mix of restrained yet mercurial characters shines through in the series. Pragmatically presented, Woo-joo is a tad different than revenge-seeking characters who easily get their payback done, either with skills or power.

She does not have both but her strong convictions. But it realistically depicts the struggle to which regular people can easily relate.

It’s interesting that she struggles a lot, in getting things done for her plan. But she bears the frustrations because she has to do it for her personal peace.

Meanwhile, the apathetic and ruminative mood of Kim Young Kwang draws an enigma where you want to pray for him. Kim captured that lonely vibe that you literally want to give him a hug.

Can Woo-joo exact revenge as planned? Or will Dong-jin thaw her cold heart in the process?
