K-Drama First Look: “You are My Spring” Enlightens Viewers About Mental Health Awareness

You are my spring

Setting a cozy atmosphere, You are My Spring gave the viewers a luring start on what the drama would tackle.

The first episodes of You Are My Spring meet the expectations of the viewers on what would happen in the characters and the plot itself.

Actors Seo Hyun Jin, Kim Dong Wook, and Yoon Park incredibly showed their charismatic characters and successfully crafted their personas.

Opening Week Rating:

The drama depicts the story of Kang Da-jung (Seo Hyun Jin) and Joo Young-do (Kim Dong Wook), who lives in the same apartment building.

Da-jung is a manager at a five-star hotel, while Young-do is a psychiatrist that tends with emotional wounds.

You Are My Spring Opening Week Story

The drama starts with a flashback of the experiences of little Da-jung that had a hard time dealing with family problems.

Years later, she lives a comfortable life having a stable job as a manager in a five-star hotel which helped her acquire her apartment.

Under her place, Young-do moved his psychiatric clinic and diligently listened to his patient’s concerns.

However, in the same place, a murder took place and left the audience with a question: Why did he pick the same place for his clinic?

Young-do eventually meets Da-jung and had a little conversation at her place.

Being a psychiatrist, he reads the possible principles and morals of Da-jung that made her teary-eyed.

Later on, Young-do meets Chae-Jun (Yoon Park), who showed keen interest in Da-jung.

Chae-joon, wearing a sweet smile, gave paper flowers to Da-jung. They also went to dates and conversing anything that came to their minds.

However, in Young-do’s mind, he senses that there is something off with Chae-joon and thinks he’s a sociopath.

He also suspects that he might have something to do with the local murder case.

Closing the second episode, Chae-Joon stands in a high place and suddenly jumps leaving the viewers in shock.

You are My Spring Opening Week Musings

While watching the first scenes of the drama, it opened with the backstory of Da-Jung having troubles with his father. It also revealed how abusive his father is to her mother.

Showing the traumatizing events in Da-jung’s childhood, it expounds that different circumstances that happened in the past may have a lingering effect on the present, especially in the child’s personality.

In the drama, Young-do easily assessed Da-jung’s personality, not because he can read minds, but rather, he observes the woman’s tastes and way of speaking.

As someone who studies Psychology, I can say that the acting skills of Dong Wook showed professionalism for someone who is in the profession of psychiatry.

I also loved how the drama used psychological terms like “transference,” “sociopath,” and “Anti-Social Personality Disorder.”

Psychologists and psychiatrists aren’t allowed to get patients specifically coming from their friends and family members to avoid unconscious redirection of emotions that might affect the therapy.

That’s why in the drama, Young-do’s ex-wife Ahn Ga-young (Nam Gyu Ri) isn’t allowed to get his ex-husband as her therapist.

Giving a little fact, Young-do called Chae-Joon a sociopath. As a psychiatrist, Young-do wouldn’t call him like that unless he observed an unusual behavior.

Sociopaths are the people diagnosed with “Anti-Social Personality Disorder”, meaning these people lack empathy, remorse and are excellent at manipulating people.

Moreover, the drama does not only focus on the investigation of the murder case but also narrates the healing of every character with their emotional wounds.

Young-do also offered his ears to Da-jung and expects her to share her thoughts sometime in the future.

I love how the drama promotes mental health awareness with a tinge of mystery and romance.

The chemistry of actors Seo Hyun Jin and Dong Wook is very much anticipated on how they will comfort each other and break through their struggles.

You are My Spring airs every Monday and Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. You can watch this drama on tvN and Netflix.
