Building Her Character

Describing her character as a competent person in the workplace, actress Park Min Young explains how this competency has brought envy from the people in Jin Ha-kyung’s life

“Jin Ha-kyung is a smart and elite person who entered the Korea Meteorological Administration as a level 5 civil servant. There is a lot of envy and jealousy around her. She has to lead people who are much older than her…”

Elaborating on how she portrayed her character, the actress sees Jin Ha-kyung as someone who has been born cold-hearted and a perfectionist. However, she also notes how her character’s personality was also influenced by her working life.

“…but I think she also has a personality that is naturally formed while working. She seems to want to organize the situation in her own system, rather than cause her to significantly change her emotions in any situation. I was trying to build Jin Ha-kyung around this point.”

Differentiating Jin Ha-kyung

Acknowledging her character’s personality, Park Min Young sets the points that she is different from Jin Ha-kyung.

“Jin Ha-kyung is a person who lacks social skills. She’s also cool at points she doesn’t understand. That part is very different from me.”

For her similarities with Jin Ha-kyung, the actress recognizes her work ethics as similar to the role she plays.

“On the other hand, if she has something similar to me, it is that I also tend to be a perfectionist when I work. I am not lazy at work. I tend to be diligent.”

She continues by saying that she stresses the heavy importance of preparing for the character she plays, and such an aspect is close to Jin Ha-kyung.

“I try not to hurt others when it comes to my work. I think I should know the character I play best. So I study and research a lot. This point resembles Jin Ha-kyung.”

Now, when the actress was asked if she was faced with a similar scenario with Jin Ha-kyung who breaks up with her long-time boyfriend, actress Park Min Young responds by feeling sadness first, but will then be followed by relief.

“If you’re actually going through a breakup, I think there are two things. I think I’ll be sad to say goodbye first. I’m sure you’re overwhelmed by shock, betrayal, and anger. Then you’ll think you’ve come to your senses and rationally cleaned up…”

Adding to what she has said, the actress cites a line from the drama that can help in recovering quickly from a breakup.

“There is a line in the drama that says, ‘My ancestors helped me’.I think it’s a good thing and I think I’ll recover quickly. It depends on how you interpret it.”

Aware of the damages of breaking up with a long-time partner, Park Min Young shares how she views it as something that was not meant to be, beneficial on her character’s part to cut off a toxic person in her life.

“Depending on how you feel and how you break up with your marriage partner, you’ll have a lot of damage and loss, but I’m realistic, so I think I’ll sort it out thinking it’s not meant for me. For Jin Ha-kyung, it’s a very good thing (since her trashy ex-boyfriend has gone and a new love has arrived).”

On Her Favorite Scene from the drama

Jin Ha-kyung is known to be cold and calm, however, her emotions rise up in the famous scene in the drama. As she breaks up with her long-time partner, Han Ki-joon, who has been meeting another person before their wedding, Jin Ha-kyung pours out swear words to him.

Recalling that scene, actress Park Min Young finds it special as she emotionally reacts to the 10-year relationship Jin Ha-kyung had.

“This is my favorite scene. Doesn’t the 10 years they’ve been together really mean nothing? Couples who have just started dating are different from couples who have been together for 10 years.”

Sharing how she portrayed such a scene, the actress shares how she was immersed while filming that scene.

“Even if they say the same thing, the depth of their feelings is different. Tears came to my eyes as I tried to play a role of despair to the point where I had to forget the past 10 years in an instant. So it exploded. To the extent of restraining those emotions when acting.

Admitting it was hard to shoot that scene, nonetheless, the actress still found herself feeling great about it.

“That’s why the impact of 10 years is huge. It was difficult filming that scene, but it felt good.”

Feeling deep emotions while being in the situation of her character, Park Min Young reveals that her ideas were reflected when Jin Ha-kyung exploded in that scene.

“Since it’s before marriage, it can’t be described as an affair, but the scene where Jin Ha-kyung, who witnesses her boyfriend having a relationship with another woman at her newlywed house, beats Han Ki-joon with a bag in the rain, is part of my opinion.

With her unintended intense emotional acting, the actress consulted with the director, and the director has given his approval to it.

“I’m also a woman…Without realizing it, I was feeling more emotional, and after filming, I carefully talked to the director about this part and he said, “It’s good.” That’s how the scene was born.”

Having people who have undergone such experience in the real world, actress Park Min Young considers how such moments felt unpleasant for the people who use the lines she has said while breaking up.

“I thought it would be cool when I acted, but I was sad. It’s a really cool line and it’s funny when I see the scene to spit out ‘X bastard’ coolly, but I’m sad that I can only do this for 10 years from the perspective of the line.”

Acting Together with Yoon Park

Given the promise of marriage, Jin Ha-kyung’s fiancée abandons her and marries another woman.

Reacting to that, Park Min Young reveals that she still gets angry hearing about it, and also praises how well Yoon Park portrayed his character.

“I get angry every time. I get so angry every time I shoot, I hate to see it, and I hate that feeling. I think Han Ki-joon’s character must be Yoon Park. That’s how well he pulled off the mean character…He created a character that was less hateful and understandable.”

Although still angered with her colleague’s character, the actress redeems Yoon Park by telling everyone about his remarkable acting skills.

“Unlike Han Ki-joon, Yoon Park is a good person both personally and as an actor. This was the first time I knew he was such a good actor.”

In addition to that, the actress also appreciates her chemistry with the actor, and looks forward to working with him more while jokingly expressing her lingering dislike towards his character.

“Acting together is fun, and we have good chemistry. I want to meet you in other works. Of course, if I look at the characters alone, I get mad.”

Continuing what she has said Park Min Young admits that her antipathy towards Han Ki-joon stood strong even after the drama.

“I am Korean. I want to be cool like people in Hollywood, but I can speak a little English, but I’m Korean to the core. I’m not awake yet. I don’t want to make eye contact with a man who has done such a ‘bad thing’ to me again…Because I ‘witnessed’ it. I am not a person of such broad generosity.”

Outlook in Her Acting Career

Known for taking on projects without large gaps in between, actress Park Min Young is ready to bravely face both failures and successes.

“I have no fear of failure. I think it’s because it’s a relief, or because every work was not successful. If there’s up, there’s down, and if there’s down, there’s up. If you go up, you can go down, and if you go down, you can go up again.”

Maintaining her bright outlook in her career, the actress optimistically views her ups and downs in life.

“Even if I hesitate for a while, I have a belief that I can go up again if I can work hard. If you go up for a long time, it could be downhill someday. So there is no fear of challenges. Sometimes I let go of the pressure of showing something and transforming, and sometimes I try to develop myself by thinking, ‘You like this part.’”

Relating her life to the weather, Park Min Young recounts her vast experiences that reside close to her acting career.

“For me, spring, summer, autumn, and winter are clear and certain. Sometimes typhoons come, there are droughts, and there are floods. I’ve been through everything my age could have experienced. I can’t publish a diary full of my personal stories, but my acting is always driven.”

Living with such a mindset, nothing can stop actress Park Min Young as she also carries on with humor and wit in her 20-year acting career. Recognized as an actress who plays her character well, fans may also look forward to the future characters she will portray.
