Bulgasal Immortal Souls

Bulgasal: The Immortal Souls Episode 5 Key Moments

Hwal Brings Sang-un To His Home

Encountering another bulgasal, Hwal (Lee Jin Wook) saves Sang-un (Kwon Nara) who magically thwarted Eul-tae (Lee Joon) with her strange power.

Hwal brings Sang-un to his house, but while unconscious, he can’t make himself kill her.

A flashback from the night Eul-tae killed Sang-yeon reveals how Sang-un possesses a power of invincibility that would hinder Eul-tae to kill her. It also explains that Sang-yeon can remember her past lives and knows the evil bulgasal can only be killed by Hwal.

Hye-suk ajumma fetches Si-ho (Gong Seung Yeon) from the motel she was staying in to bring her to the butcher shop.

Trying to convince the police officers of what he witnessed, Ho-yeol was dragged down by his junior. He explains about a new lead on the cold case 15 years ago. But he was reprimanded to move on from the case that turned his life into a mess.

Finding a chance to escape Hwal’s house, Sang-un’s efforts are futile. Her inability to remember her past lives makes Hwal’s plans of finding the other bulgasal harder.

The Other Bulgasal

Lucky for him, Eul-tae phoned him to meet and chat. It seems the older bulgasal knows about Hwal’s cursed life. But Eul-tae strikes a deal of providing the premise of the curse if he will help him destroy Sang-un’s soul.

Apparently, Eul-tae wants to kill Sang-un because of his cursed wound that is painful and won’t heal. He has killed the reincarnations seven times already. Needing only eight to break the curse, he struggles to do it when the newest reincarnation happened to be twins and splitting the special abilities as well.

His earlier attempts did not yield positive results. The last one shares the same fate of him being unable to kill Sang-un. Thus, he needs Hwal to do the deed.

Declining Eul-tae’s offer, they enter a battle mode of who gets to kill Sang-un. Meanwhile, Si-ho notices a photo of a young girl and feels the man beside her looks familiar. When she was left out momentarily, a monster aid of Eul-tae already took her.

On the cusp of killing Sang-un, Hye-suk ajumma rushes to report Si-ho’s disappearance.

They head to where Si-ho is being held hostage even though knowing it was a trap. But they were too late and Eul-tae demands Hwal bring Sang-un to him.

Declaring he will keep Sang-un alive until he can kill the evil bulgasal, Hwal makes a resolute choice to save Si-ho and help Sang-un.

Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Episode 5 Musings

There’s a lot about Sang-un’s bulgasal life we hope to be revealed soon. Appearing to have a deeply tangled destiny with two men she cursed are really giving her quite haunting experiences. More so, the real deal about baby Hwal’s curse is also in the pipeline to be answered along with Si-ho’s special ability which seems to linger in her reincarnations.

As the series uses rebirth as a layered plot concept, the narrative development inevitably will flow to bring the characters in Hwal’s tragic past life in the present timeline. That also aligns with the unfinished businesses and retributions that vaguely faded after the Goryeo timeline arc.

Moreover, previous qualities or incidents of the reincarnated person are carried over to their present life. This knowledge was highlighted from General Dan’s unfortunate shoulder injury gained from a water monster. That’s why Hwal also warned him to stay away from the water.

Both owning their roles, Lee Jin Wook and Lee Joon fortify the excitement in the series. Their confrontation scenes so far are worth rooting for. So far, Lee Joon is decorating his villain character with a unique flavor. We know they are bound to proceed with escalating levels of discord throughout the story.

Requiring patience, the intricate worldbuilding of Bulgasal: The Immortal Souls is truly challenging. Hopefully, down the stretch, all the elaborate sketching, withdrawn clues and soon-to-be uncovered mysteries will fall in the right places.
