Scholar Ha reveals to Cheon Gi what happened to him on the day of the rainmaking ritual in the recent episode of Lovers of the Red Sky.
Hong Cheon Gi begins her journey inside Gohwawon where she works for two different tasks at morning and night. Viewing the burned portrait of the King, a strong energy causes her to fall on the floor. Meanwhile, Prince Joohyang discovers the demon residing inside Scholar Ha after Mi Su’s confirmation.

Lovers of the Red Sky Episode 8 Key Moments
“You went blind, your father passed away, then your family disintegrated, but everything was out of your control, Ram.”
After seeing Scholar Ha on the way, Cheon Gi chooses to walk together with him instead of Prince Yangmyeong. The two talk under a shed while the rain is pouring.
Scholar Ha reveals to Cheon Gi what happened to him on the day they promised to meet up, the same day of the rainmaking ritual. He informs her on how his misfortune made him turn against the world.
Cheon Gi comforts Ha Ram by using the same words he said before, telling that what happened is beyond their control. She assures that he can share how he truly feels from time to time, and leave him under the shed.
“You should enjoy the starlight. Stay within that light. That’s the only way you will stay safe”
Kim Gong Rae’s letter reaches the King even though he is dead. He warns the King on stopping Prince Joohyang’s plans, so the King then writes a letter for Prince Yangmyeong and Prince Joohyang. He also hastens the restoration of the burned portrait in hopes of abdicating soon.
Prince Joohyang and Mi Su speculate that Hong Cheon Gi is the divine painter that the King needs. They also wonder whether the demon resides inside the body of Scholar Ha. With that, Mi Su sees the need for Scholar Ha’s blood to confirm their idea.
“It’s not a crime to be poor, so do not be ashamed.”
Fulfilling his promise, Prince Yangmyeong brings the Chungsimwon, the medicine for Cheon Gi’s father. As a sign of gratitude, Cheon Gi offers her painting that represents peace and safety to Prince Yangmyeong.
Curious about what happened on the day it was raining, Prince Yangmyeong asks Cheon Gi about it, but she does not respond. He leaves telling that the ink on the painting is not yet dry, and that she has poorly hidden her feelings.
“It’s because sincerity doesn’t come from words alone.”
Prince Yangmyeong asks Scholar Ha what his relationship with Cheon Gi is. He admits that they have known each other for a long time after bluffing that it was his first meeting with her in the dye house.
They confront each other about their feelings for Cheon Gi. While Prince Yangmyeong questions Scholar Ha’s sincerity, Scholar Ha questions what the Prince’s duty in the royal family is.
Exiting the room, Prince Yangmyeong thinks to himself that he will do his best in winning Cheon Gi’s affection. Scholar Ha also stays firm that he will not let the Prince take Cheon Gi.
“Changing one’s decided fate is no easy feat.”
In day time, Hong Cheon Gi works in restoring maps in Seomungwan. She sees Scholar Ha, and he guides her around their workplace. He also brings her to see the stars, and Cheon Gi excitedly sees the Big Dipper, stars which the two remember from their childhood.
Scholar Ha reflects on the meaning of the Big Dipper, and Cheon Gi asks whether someone’s fate is decided upon birth. She adds how useless it is to better oneself when one’s fate is already sealed.
“This is how a skilled painter draws a person encompassing the features as well as their character.”
Expert Han Geon tours Cheon Gi around the Gyeongwon Pavillion where the portraits of the past kings are stored. He shares how meticulous and particular those portraits are. They briefly talk about how Hong Eun O’s last painting was the portrait of the king. Expert Han orients Cheon Gi on her assigned task of the restoration of the portrait.
She stares at the burned portrait, and as she is drawn to it, she falls down to the floor. They exit the pavilion, and enter the place she will be working at night together with Prince Yangmyeong. Realizing she left her bandage in the pavilion, she goes back along with Scholar Ha, but the demon in him suddenly awakens.
Lovers of the Red Sky Episode 8 Musings
Prince Yangmeyong looks so good when he was enthusiastic about the painting Cheon Gi prepared for him. We can feel how he’s hurt with the obvious direction Cheon Gi is looking at. I just hope that his character would not go to the extreme, competing for Cheon Gi’s affection.
The letter he received from the King is very different from his brother Prince Joohyang. As seen in the letters, the King relies more on Prince Yangmyeong who is loyal to the assigned position. The King implicitly warns Prince Joohyang on his greed, but this does not faze the Prince with his plans. He does not fear anybody, even his own father, the King.
Ha Ram has finally admitted his memories with Cheon Gi in their childhood days, but he stays firm that he cannot transform back to the same boy before. It’s understandable how the misfortune he encountered at his young age causes him to turn his back on the world. Like Cheon Gi, we too all wish that he will come back to a peaceful life even with his scars.
The King rushes his abdication as his sickness is also getting worse. With that haste, Prince Joohyang is also slowly catching up on the King’s moves. With Mi Su’s assistance, he finally confirms that Cheon Gi is a divine painter, and the demon resides in Ha Ram,.
In the next week’s episodes, we shall expect to see more about how Cheon Gi and Prince Yangmyeong will handle Scholar Ha after seeing the dark energy seeping out of him. Moreover, we can expect to see the progress in the love triangle as Cheon Gi works closely with the Prince and Scholar Ha.
