Our Blues Episode 16 & 17 Highlights
Our Blues episode 16 starts showing Kang Ok-dong burning her belongings. Eun-hui is at Miss Kang’s house, concerned about what she is doing. Eventually, Eun-hui notices the blood on Miss Kang’s mouth as she coughs. Miss Kang does not listen to Eun-hui, begging her not to strain herself and stopping her from burning her clothes and mementos.
Subsequently, the episode introduces the family of Miss Chun-hui, the head of the Haenyeo divers. The new character joining the merry Jeju folks is Eun-gi, the granddaughter of Miss Chun-hui.
Man-su, the only son Miss Chun-hui has left, is telling Eun-gi stories of how amazing her grandmother is. The kid is enticed by the tales about the sea and 100 moons told by her father, and she looks forward to their upcoming trip to Jeju to visit Miss Chun-hui. However, a typical day became a disaster.
On Man-su’s way to work, he encountered an accident. Eun-gi’s mother is in distress because Man-su went into comatose. Having to take care of Man-su in the hospital, Eun-gi’s mother decided to leave Eun-gi in the care of Miss Chun-hui for two weeks.
Eun-gi in Jeju
In-Gwon. Ho-sik and even Dong-seok all greet Eun-gi with glee. They are the elder brother figures of Man-su; hence they welcomed Eun-gi warmly. Miss Chun-hui is delighted to bond with her beloved granddaughter. However, she appears to be a very teasing and playful grandmother rather than a strict or highly doting kind.
Chun-hui is happy to be with her grandkid. But she wonders why Hae-Seon and Man-su brought the kid just now when they seldom do so before. This piques her curiosity; hence she asks Eun-gi where her father is and what is happening at home.
On the other hand, Eun-gi is firm in saying what her mother asks her to say. That her dad is busy at work, and Hae-Seon will also be preoccupied for a while.
Kiddie Troubles
As the days passed, Miss Chun-hui started seeing Eun-gi’s childish whims. Eun-gi requests specific food and how to cook them during lunch and dinner. She clearly is not used to provincial life.
At the market, trouble brews between one of the vendors and Miss Chun-hui. Since it has been a week since Eun-gi is staying in Jeju, the nosy people began suspecting that Eun-gi has been abandoned.
They are all aware that Man-Su hardly ever visits Miss Chun-hui. Since Pureung is a small town with people having close-knit relationships, gossip usually arises.
Eun-gi kept crying after hearing what the gossipers said in the market. She shouts at Miss Chun-hui at home, claiming that her parents do not abandon her and that her mom will pick her up soon.
This issue subsides for a bit. Eun-gi still gets to enjoy the rest of her stay in Jeju accompanying Miss Chun-hui and spending time with Eun-hui, Yeong-Ok, Gi-jun and Byeol-i. She eventually encounters the grandkid of the gossiper in the market. Eun-gi decides to play with her.
However, the kid started talking about how she had accepted being abandoned by her parents. This triggered Eun-gi, and a fight broke out between the kids. This heightens Miss Chun-hui’s suspicions. She tries calling Han-Seon to know what happened.
Man-Su’s Critical Condition
A few more days have passed, and Eun-gi is now playmates with the girl she fought on the beach. As they grew close, Eun-gi began telling the kid what really happened and why she was in Jeju. Coincidentally, Miss Kang was walking by and heard everything she said.
Eun-gi confesses that she is hiding it from her grandmother so she would not worry about her father. But he is currently unconscious in the hospital, and her mom is caring for her dad.
On the other hand, Miss Chun-hui is growing increasingly anxious. She then takes action after Eun-hui informs her that Han-Seon is no longer working at Mokpo. She did not waste any time and took the ferry to see her daughter-in-law. Upon arriving at Mokpo, she learned about Man-su’s accident, and she rushed to the hospital to see her son.
Although Han-Seon told her she would fetch Eun-gi soon, she said Eun-gi could be left in her care for now. Heartbreaking news was also delivered to her that day. Man-su’s life is in a critical state, and the doctors have already notified Han-Seon that they have the discretion to turn off the life support.
100 Moons For Eun-gi
Distraught about the truth, Miss Chun-hui tells Eun-gi that the dolphins and the moons her father talked about are all a lie. She went as far as to tell the kid that she might have to live with her. She will stay in Jeju because her parents cannot fetch her anymore. Eun-gi cried out loud, refusing to believe Miss Chun-hui.
Realizing that the kid was hurt and pitiful for soon losing her father, Miss Chun-hui sought the help of the boat captains. With Captain Park Jeong-jun in the lead, they gathered 100 sailboats at the harbor of Pureung. The lights of the boats radiated brightly like moons giving Eun-gi a magical night for wishes.
The Jeju folks all cry, pray, and hope for Man-su’s survival as they all stare at the glistening harbor. In particular, little Eun-gi beams with hope shouting out loud that her father did not lie. There are 100 moons in Jeju, and she will soon be with her parents.
Our Blues Episode 16 & 17 Musings
Splendid Portrayals
At a young age, Go So Yoo had showcased commendable acting prowess. She was a natural actress and her acting is very touching. Her smiles are like a ray of sunshine added to the series. Moreover, seeing the characters interact with her is so refreshing. This episode is indeed a mixture of heartwarming and lively scenes.
Other than knowing Miss Chun-hui as “the boss of the Sea in Jeju”, viewers get to know her backstory and how she is as a parent and grandmother. Not just that but, it was very moving to see how the Jeju folks were hand in hand to help Miss Chun-hui and Eun-gi.
What is more, there is a lot going on with the other characters as well. Yeong-Ok and Jeong-jun for instance seemingly take their relationship to the next level.
On the other hand, Miss Kang Ok-dong is exhibiting concerning health conditions. As the plot pushes toward the end of its tale, viewers will get to know one more story; this time, it is about the complex relationship between Miss Kang and Dong-Seok.
