The Red Sleeve Episodes 7 & 8 Key Moments
“It’s another virtue of a master to show mercy on his servants’ mistakes.”
Smelling the roasted chestnuts somewhere, Lee San’s guard almost calls for the inspector court lady to reprimand the court maids. However, when Lee San notices that Deok-im is with them, he instantly stops his guard and explains to him that he is to extend forgiveness to his servants’ mistakes.
Eavesdropping on Deok-im and her friends’ conversation, Lee San subsequently heard of her friends’ conversing about who is more charming, whether it be the scholars or the palace officers. When it is Deok-im’s turn to respond, Lee San and his guard intently listen as the man she describes she loves is the Crown Prince.
Without finishing Deok-im’s explanation, the prince rushes outside, with his face flushed with astonishment at what he had just heard.
“Lady Seo told me that she came on your behalf because you were too sick.”
When Prince San visits the garden, he notices Deok-im watering some plants. He approaches her, who appears to be in a cheerful mood.
Assuring the prince that it was not due to her mood but to the great weather, he instantly brought up Lady Seo taking over Deok-im’s work with the reason that she was feeling ill.
Acting like she caught a cold, Deok-im apologizes to him and reminds him that it would be terrible if Lee San also caught a cold from her.
“A mere girl like me transcribed the books for the King with two princesses.”
After the head court lady gives the king the command to burn all the books, Young-hee, a friend of Deok-im’s, refuses to hand over the books she personally transcribed for the monarch.
She attempts to calmly explain to Young-hee that there’s no other way for them to keep the books. Deok-ro suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He further tells the three ladies that there is always a way for those who seek it.
Persuading the other court lady to allow Young-hee to keep her book, Deok-ro and Deok-im later have an argument about why she remained silent if it was wrong for her friend to keep the books.
“You are the mother of everyone in the land of Joseon. So, I beg you like a child asking her mother to show mercy.”
Finding the royal book in Deok-im’s belongings, the queen inquires whether she has any witnesses or proof to verify her claim of how she obtained the book.
When Lee San arrives at the location where the queen is questioning Deok-im, he promptly decides to punish his maid for it is hard to believe her claims without providing any evidence.
Fighting to spare her life, Deok-im pleads with the queen, since she is everyone’s mother in Joseon, and she begs like a child for her mother to show mercy on her.
Allowing Deok-im to meet with the king, the queen gives her a chance to plead for her innocence.
“That night when you went to Consort Yeong’s funeral parlour, you were not alone.”
Due to Deok-im’s exquisite ability, she was pardoned for a wrongly charged crime for her narrative of how she received the book from the king.
Given that the king has dementia, Deok-im was able to jog his memory. It was as if the king was present when Deok-im paid her respects to Consort Yeong as a young maid.
Afterwards, Deok-im expresses her relief and blurts out that it is not easy to live as a court maid. Approaching Deok-im, Lee San informs her that it was not simple to live as a crown prince either.
Handing over the book back to its rightful owner, Lee San further tells Deok-im that she was not alone when she visited Consort Yeong’s funeral parlor.
In response to the prince’s inquiry as to how he knows, Deok-im just confirms she was not alone that night. The queen then approaches them and advises her to rest.
“I definitely not steal it, but I thought you did not believe me, which made me angry and upset.”
Visiting the garden again to water the flowers, Deok-im openly expresses her gratitude to the crown prince for stepping up at the King’s Palace. But then Lee San came to interrupt her, speaking alone to herself.
Apologizing for misunderstanding the prince’s intention, Deok-im thought that Lee San did not believe her for not stealing the book. That’s why she became angry and upset with him, and now understands the reason why he did that.
Correspondingly, Deok-im feels glad that day as the prince defended and protected her at the King’s palace.
When asked if Deok-im met a child from a noble family, she tells him of the boy she came across as they went to Consort Yeong’s house.
Recalling the name of the boy, Deok-im remembers that the crying child she comforted is Lee San.
