The Veil

The Veil Episode 4 Key Moments

“I called the number you gave me. But a group of other people showed up at the rendezvous point.”

Pondering on the recent pieces of information he received, Ji-hyuk assessed his situation. He knows Hwang Moo-sool did not kill his partners. In his dying words, Choon-gil also revealed that the safe route he provided almost killed him. He asked him not to trust anyone ever.

Reaching a dead-end to the receiver of Choon-gil’s call, Ji-hyuk’s informant is unaware that NIS was hacked and the information he was retrieving was specifically removed. NIS traces the backdoor created for the hack to be of Director Choi Il-lak, a former agent and member of the Technology Development team who was said to have committed suicide.

Apparently, his son who is also a hacker also knows Je-yi. He also specifically retrieved a top-notch intel a year ago. An intel that the divided higher-ups must secure for their own vested interests. DC Do and Chief Ha connive on one team while Domestic Intelligence Bureau Deputy Commissioner Lee In-hwan assigned Seo Su-yeon (Park Ha Sun) to do it.

In case the mission goes awry, it will only impact Su-yeon. Belatedly learning about Director Choi’s suicide, Ji-hyuk and Je-yi share how they became acquainted. They also agree to find his son Sang-kyun but he escapes when fragments of Ji-hyuk’s memory resurfaced while they were chatting. He apparently contacted Sang-kyun to retrieve the information of who received Choon-gil’s call a year ago.

“You killed my dad to cover up your dirty laundry.”

Director Kang meets Ji-hyuk and relays his suspicion on DC Do’s hand to what happened in the murders involving NIS agents. She sealed the mission and the recent hacking incident leaked the very information she was trying to protect. With Domestic and Foreign Intelligence trying to get hold of the intel that will hide its weakness and gain an upper hand, whichever gets Sang-kyun first, will not be good for Ji-hyuk’s team.

Thus, Director Kang asks Ji-hyuk to track Sang-kyun so he can be protected by a neutral team to preserve the intel. Sang-kyun secretly sends a message to Je-yi of wanting to meet Ji-hyuk but Su-yeon tapped on their conversation.

Using them as bait to lure Sang-kyun, Ji-hyuk managed to speak with him and was given a piece of paper with information from Ji-hyuk and Directo Choi’s conversation. But Su-yeon through the train’s internal phone interrupts their conversation by making Ji-hyuk look bad to Sang-kyun. The latter tries to escape at the next stop but was captured.

Getting hold of Director Choi’s laptop, the expert team sees nothing but clean logs. But when they push to connect the laptop to the server, a virus Sang-kyun installed got activated causing great damage.

To stop the virus from spreading, Sang-kyun demands to talk to Ji-hyuk. He then asks about the meaning of the text he gave to him. Ji-hyuk narrates the Syria mission he had with his father and how they encounter a young man who conspired with them. When they asked him why he wanted to join, he responded because they had a mutual enemy. The same password is what stopped the virus.

Unknown to them, Su-yeon placed a pen recorder which captured their conversation. Later, Sang-kyun meets with Je-yi and denies getting help from another person. He signals “phone” and calls Ji-hyuk in secret.

At that time, Ji-hyuk was asked by Su-yeon to meet her, but had to step out quickly for something. Just as Sang-kyun gives the name of the person in the chat log of Ji-hyuk and Director Choi a year ago, the same person meets Ji-hyuk’s unfathomable eyes.

The Veil Episode 4 Musings

The hero of The Veil carries on with a complicated who-to-trust game. Instead of unlocking clues though, the story seemingly throws a huge board of multiple puzzle games that are interconnected into one picture.

After the explosive fight scenes in the third episode, it’s nice that the story knows to give the viewers a rest. Based on the preview of the fifth episode, it’s going to be another enthralling drive.

Why Ji-hyuk was spared in the China mission bears the same mystery weight as to why he erased his memories.

The Veil

Could Su-yeon’s excessive rage be a way to divert that she is really the culprit Ji-hyuk is looking for? The Veil hints that she is in the ending seconds, but we need concrete evidence for it.

Aside from unraveling Ji-hyuk’s mission, Je-yi’s hidden agenda will most likely be put in the spotlight soon. The opposing factions in NIS are also bound to confront each other. No doubt that Ji-hyuk will be implicated in these ticking time bombs.
