The Veil Opening Week Story

NIS black ops agent Han Ji-hyuk (Namgoong Min) is found in a water vessel a year after he went missing. His last mission, named Brown Bear Project, caused the deaths of his two partners while they were working in China.

His return is also not met with a warm welcome as the failed operation caused chaos in the organization with some of the field agents murdered by a supposed leak of their identities. Only Ji-hyuk has the major grasp of the mission, however, his memory of the past year was mysteriously wiped out.

His situation gets even more cryptic when he traced a video of his own self admitting to have caused the vanishing of his memories. The catch is for him to unearth the secret rat in the organization. It further leads him to Huayang Gang, the same evil squad he also investigated as part of Brown Bear Project.

After being summoned to crack the captured second-in-command of the gang, he, unfortunately, realized too late that the direction he aimed is wrong. The real culprit escapes the police custody unscathed.

The Veil Opening Week Story

I have high expectations of The Veil since Namgoong Min has rarely let me down with his projects, especially the hero-centric ones. With its film-like scale, I am hoping the opening week intensity heightens even more. A plot full of twists usually does not let us down anyway. Also, the crafty open and hiding villains seemingly are on equal footing to the tenacious hero of the series.

Superbly written and portrayed so far, Ji-hyuk’s quest spurs a herculean task where he can’t trust anyone. His missing memories do not help at all his puzzling situation. It’s a dark horse story where he has to battle uncertainties, but be firm with his chosen decisions. There is no backup plan to deduce but he has to draw plenty of escape routes in case of a wrong move.

Neutralizing the taut atmosphere is the presence of Jin-hyuk’s perky new partner, Yoo Je-yi (Kim Ji Eun) whose skills hopefully can come in handy for her partner’s complex mission. On the other hand, Seo Soo-yeon (Park Ha Sun), evokes an indecipherable character that is yet to confirm whether she’s an ally or an enemy.

Certainly, this series is prepared to detonate layers of cryptic clues and surprises along the way. While giving its interesting overview in the first two episodes, it also threw a convincing bait on why it is worth watching until the end.

Delve on the undercover world of Han Ji-hyuk in The Veil every Friday and Saturday.

International fans can watch it on Viu.
