The Veil

The Veil Episode 7 Key Moments

“I’ve been pushed around like a slave and unable to fit in neither side.

You fall deeper and deeper no matter how hard you try to get out.” After being captured, Han Ji-hyuk is placed on high-level imprisonment as he worked on the clues he has so far gathered. He also refuses to meet anyone.

Meanwhile, Chang Chun-woo is captured by Baek Mo-sa who questions why he was chasing after him. Offering Chun-woo to join hands with him, the latter declines not wanting to fall deeper into the fiery pit. The next day, Chun-woo’s lifeless body is suspended on a vacant billboard ad.

DC Do receives the original video file proving Ji-hyuk’s innocence and the news of Chun-woo’s death. She asks NIS Chief Bang to let them take the case as it involves Su-yeon’s death as well.

DC Lee disagrees with her request since she was not able to handle her team well causing irreparable damages. He further questions her competence for causing failed operations. NIS Chief agrees with Director Lee and decides to leave the concern to Internal Affairs.

Bargaining two weeks to resolve the case, DC Do pledges to resign if she won’t resolve the issue.

The Veil

“I’m the one who decides if I’m going to stay here or not.”

Director Kang meets Chief Ha and talks about the failures of DC Do in leading their team have caused so many deaths. He also asks to lengthen Ji-hyuk’s seclusion by provoking him. However, Ji-hyuk has seen through their plans already and tells him to relay to Director Kang and everyone that he will be the one to decide if he wants to go out or not.

Chief Ha learns from the doctor that Yoo Je-yi has communicated over the phone with Ji-hyuk recently, albeit not meeting her in person when she attempted to visit him. Ji-hyuk goes to Je-yi who confessed to helping Director Kang to capture him. He also asks her for help since he might be taking Chun-woo’s case.

Back at his apartment, Ji-hyuk ponders how the intel leak went from Kyung-seok to Su-yeon and to Director Kang who he thinks to be connected to Sangmuhoe. He also ponders on the deal set for the Bloody Friday intel leak.

Reporting back to DC Do, Ji-hyuk got a quick briefing of his task. On his way out, he sees Director Kang and asks him if he knows about Sangmuhoe and gets a response to just be careful of his suspicions.

DC Lee and Director Jung converse on their next move now that Ji-hyuk was summoned back by DC Do for most likely a separate mission. Laying on the plans to make sure DC Do and Ji-hyuk fail, DC Lee orders Director Jung to leave Ji-hyuk alone.

Meanwhile, Ji-hyuk and Je-yi convene to discuss the photo of Chun-woo meeting two men that spurred the Bloody Friday incident. She feeds him the details about the high-ranking North Korean official in the photo, who seemed to have vanished.

The other man in the photo she still cannot put a name on. Ji-hyuk shares that Chun-woo was sent by Sangmuhoe, and was most likely killed by them as well.

The Veil

“Here’s our advice, don’t try to turn us against you.”

Ji-hyuk tracks a lead that could probably bring him closer to Sangmuhoe while Je-yi checks Chun-woo’s place thoroughly. He learns of a PDA device with a unique app installed probably used by the group to communicate. He also feeds her how Sangmuhoe members don’t know each other and keep in touch discreetly.

Je-yi relays her discovery of how Chun-woo also participated in the NIS ZIP project where a PTSD drug is given to him. The same drug is also what caused Ji-hyuk to lose his memories. Apparently, the drug pushes for memories were selectively blocked.

While inside his car, the PDA receives a cryptic message which means a member of Sangmuhoe is within the communication range. Things go more mysterious when Je-yi and Ji-hyuk discover the UV light pattern on Chun-woo’s tattoed body.

But another dead end arises as code breakers can’t decipher the pattern. Getting the idea from a QR code she spotted in a convenience store, Je-yi calls Ji-hyuk and uses the QR code technology to decipher the cryptic pattern. They find Kaislond syndrome, a rare disease that disables the body.

Among the people with that disease, they dig deeper on Chun Pyung Il. But when they visit the hospital, they weren’t able to get information. Deducing the man they are looking for could be still in the hospital, they studied the blueprint and stalk the strategically placed freight elevator.

“Everything I did was because you made me do it.”

Receiving information from Myung-ki that the NIS psychologist he saw previously is the same person in charge of ZIP drug. He goes to see Kim Yeo-jin about it to crack a lead. Not wasting time, Ji-hyuk confronts Chief Ha whose name was given by Doctor Kim.

When he asked if he also sent the video, Chief Ha checks if he has retrieved his memories, but realizes Ji-hyuk did not. He also tells him that all the things he did were requested by him.

Chief Ha chronicles the call he got from him two months before he returned. Ji-hyuk ordered him to secretly go to Shenyang with the blackmailing card of his fund embezzlement in Syria.

Owning all the help he extended so far to Ji-hyuk, the latter is still leery for all he did just because of the embezzlement card he has on him.

But Chief Ha asserts how he stole money because of his dire situation, but it does not mean that he is disrespectful to his career. He assures him he also wants to catch the culprit who killed their teammates.

“So you want a taste of the field. It’s like a swamp covered with blood and sweat. And to get out of the swamp, you must have this – firm determination to achieve your goal.”

At that same moment, Je-yi sees a hospital employee go to a secret route in the freight elevator. She discovers the hospital section which appears to be more of a prison for sedated people. Finding Chun Pyung Il’s room, Je-yi bravely enters it. She tries to get a cellphone signal to no avail.

Mustering her courage, she sneaks out Pyung-il but she was stopped by Baek Mo-sa and his men, and takes Pyung Il with them. Ji-hyuk arrives and they chase after the ER van. Reaching the van, they see Chun Pyung Il tied in a wheelchair. Before their very eyes, he was shot to death just as they received a message that he is a gift for them.

Moving towards the van, the man inside detonates a bomb and throws it into their car. Ji-hyuk quickly takes Je-yi but the blast made him lose consciousness. Je-yi faces Baek Mo-sa who points his gun alternately at them. He motions his gun at Ji-hyuk and a gunshot erupts loudly.

The Veil Episode 7 Musings

I don’t want to spew fearless forecasts anymore about The Veil for the fear of self-incrimination against fellow K-Drama fans. *grin Seriously though, with the remaining four episodes after tonight’s, the series can really give fans panic attacks. The series is so superbly done that it can literally break one’s heart if no proper ending will happen.

There’s something about the way Je-yi’s curious look at Baek Mo-sa and vice versa that stirs curiosity. It’s like a hint of familiarity, could be six degrees of separation with Je-yi’s father at the 5th degree.  Ultimately, Je-yi’s goal of unveiling her father’s strange disappearance would emerge sooner. Along with that, Sangmuhoe will be given more spotlight in the next episodes.

Of course, Ji-hyuk is alive because we still have five episodes left. Who’s gun was triggered and what will become of Ji-hyuk and Je-yi in this episode cliffhanger continues the superb thrilling structure of this series.

I’m still not convinced of Su-yeon’s death. We need proper closure about her demise. In observing the higher-ups of the imaginary NIS featured in this series, it’s hard not to admire how they conceal their motivations. Until now, they feel like playing a big chess game with all the results being a stalemate.

With episode 8 preview not giving clues where we are heading, it’s best to prepare the notes that we kept since day 1.  Admirably, The Veil has neatly provided us with pertinent details in every episode that makes sense – right at the moment, and as the story goes on.

Despite treading on a relatively hard-to-grasp narrative, it feels intelligently written yet easily comprehensible. Indeed, Han Ji-hyuk is facing a Herculean task of unfathomable complexity. Thus, at least the story is kind enough to lighten the trust issues building inside our hero and us viewers. We can now be safely skeptical of the true blue villains and include Ji-hyuk’s real allies in our prayers.

Can Ji-hyuk overturn the tables by bringing a resounding and genuine change to his organization?

Don’t miss the thrilling story of The Veil every Friday and Saturday on MBC. International fans can watch it on Viu!
