The Veil Episode 5 Key Moments
“This is quite confusing. What I find tough to accept is how sensitive you react to this now.”
Enraged, Ji-hyuk confronts Su-yeon about Choon-gil, but faints in the process. He wakes up in the clinic and was briefed by the doctor of what happened. The doctor also refuses to give him a prescription since he does not want to submit to treatment.
Learning about the trouble he created, Director Kang orders Ji-hyuk to take some time off, but he declines. He reasons how Su-yeon did not make a formal complaint infuriating Director Kang who comments how he has become a ticking bomb that will burst anytime.
Confused at Director Kang’s move of a disciplinary meeting, Ji-hyuk is given a warning how he will not be under his stead anymore. Ji-hyuk bumps on Su-yeon and realizes a different memory from her story about their confrontation earlier.
“The more I check her out, the more she reminds me of someone.”
Su-yeon assigns a task to the Information Center team involving North Korean reporter Jung Gi-sun. Je-yi also catches on the support Su-yeon is getting from her superiors. Ji-hyuk retrieves Su-yeon’s file from his insider friend who blabs about the weird things about her. He bluntly remarks how Su-yeon and Ji-hyuk share similarities.
Breaking in his colleague’s place, Ji-hyuk learns of the medicines she has been illegally taking and how she dated another man prior to his friend. He asks Je-yi to snoop more about it since he is barred from accessing the internal database.
They agree to share information they will gain about Su-yeon. Je-yi finds contradicting information about Jung Ki-sun’s case given by Su-yeon. So she goes to the house of Ki-sun’s cousin who was promised a safe route by betraying Ki-sun.
Tracing the clinic Su-yeon frequented, Ji-hyuk also learns about her mental treatment for depression and insomnia which the doctor blames the company for aggravating her condition.
“You don’t know how knowing the truth can make you feel isolated.”
Discovering the lifeless body of Ki-sun’s cousin, Je-yi was scolded by her superior but Su-yeon took over to explain. Later when Je-yi talks with Su-yeon about what led her to go to the place, her senior gave a cold lesson about the cruel world of finding the truth.
Allowed to proceed with the investigation further, Je-yi prepares to delve deeper into the case and agrees to report to Su-yeon first if she finds something. She knows the crucial evidence to Ki-sun’s case is her entry record in China and her dead cousin’s testimony. Analyzing the information obtained from the illegal channel, she also gets the name of the possible black ops agent who gave the information.
She shares to Ji-hyuk what she found out about NIS black agent Chang Chun-woo, her senior seems to be not familiar with him. So, Je-yi feeds Chun-woo’s decorated career. But the most important point was how he was the only survivor when the agents were obliterated from last year’s wiped out.
Setting a bait for Chun-woo to break his hibernation, they put a request to verify the authenticity of the entry logs. The very same person quietly eats his meal while looking at his CCTV monitor screens setup. He pauses the monitor with Ji-hyuk and mutters how it has been a while since he saw his “brother”.
Director Kang discusses with DC Do new reports about Ji-hyuk who was diagnosed to have dissociative amnesia after being found at the crime scene where his step-parents died. He also mentions the number of medicines he has been abusing warrants for the agency to stop Ji-hyuk’s activities.
However, DC Do ignores it citing Director Kang did it first so she will just cross the bridge when it gets there. She also excludes herself from the possible outcome drawing a line between her and Director Kang.
“You can’t catch them just because you know who they are. You should’ve felt guilt before you felt anger.”
Chang Chun-woo appears in the information Ji-hyuk retrieved from the USB he hid in his parents’ crypt. Je-yi also receives information from China that Ki-sun’s entries are false so the document provided by NIS was fabricated.
When Je-yi provided Su-yeon of the information he obtained about Ki-sun, her superior warns her to keep what she discovered and decides to take over the case. Jeyi confirms her suspicion of Su-yeon’s connection to Chun-woo which perplexes the latter who warns her junior to keep her mouth shut since she will know the answers to her questions soon.
On her way to meet Ji-hyuk, Je-yi was apprehended by Chun-woo to lure Ji-hyuk. Causing a few car collisions, Ji-hyuk finds Je-yi at the trunk of her car, the same one he was driving. Chun-woo warns him not to probe further less his colleagues like Je-yi will suffer the same consequence.
“Do not trust anyone.”
After checking Je-yi at the hospital, Ji-hyuk gives a stoic response to how she prides her recovery. He sets forth to meet Su-yeon. While walking, Su-yeon recounts her trainee days and mutters she envies his ability to be firm in his role of completing missions.
Her weakness of getting easily swayed unlike him has put her on a point of no return. She confessed about the man she’s indebted to who made a request she cannot refuse. Ji-hyuk confirms if it’s Chang Chun-woo, but before she can even affirm and apologize, blood gushes from Su-yeon’s body.
In her labored breath, she tells him not to trust anyone. Back at the Information Center team, Je-yi is perplexed to have found a video of Ki-sun’s entry in China. Meanwhile, Ji-hyuk is brought in by the police for questioning.
Sticking to his confession of a man who trigger the bullet, the captured CCTV video reveals otherwise. It was Ji-hyuk who pulled the trigger of his gun and shot Su-yeon.
The Veil Episode 5 Musings
Getting the same advice from all people not to trust anyone when he can’t even trust himself is really such a heavy load for the hero of The Veil.
I’m at the point where I would wish for all Namgoong Min’s villain characters to be summoned inside Ji-hyuk to reinforce him more. Because really hey, he can evoke any person’s protective instinct with the number of disappointments he has been tackling and more that he has not yet remembered are set to come.
Ji-hyuk’s hallucination is really fortifying the plot twists in this series. Honestly, the mind-blowing experience of every episode keeps getting better. Deftly written it’s amazing how the storytelling heads to the intention of unraveling the picture while diligently throwing surprises along the way.
At the center of The Veil is the hero with a mission to retrieve his memory and probe the internal deception prevalent in the organization he belongs to. His journey is so far mentally and emotionally investing. That is especially true because of the superb attacks and countermeasures between the opposing characters in The Veil.
Hopefully, Su-yeon survives with intact memory because of the intricate depiction of the characters which melts to the elaborate flow of the plot makes the series not friendly for those with frail hearts.
Be awash in the treacherous world of Han Ji-hyuk in The Veil on MBC. International fans can watch it on Viu!
