The Veil Episode 8 Key Moments
“Don’t try to find the answers from a far distance. Maybe the answer is among you.”
Je-yi falls on the ground from the gunshot of Baek Mo-sa. Regaining consciousness, Ji-hyuk battles a stream of memories resurfacing in his mind. Checking on Je-yi who thankfully wore a protective vest, she also wakes up.
Ji-hyuk listens to Je-yi’s claim that the villain they encountered could be her father. She is also aware of his identity as notorious criminal Baek Mo-sa. Ji-hyuk feeds her that Baek Mo-sa killed Chun-woo and purposedly approached him to get Chun Pyung Il.
He also assessed that Sangmuhoe and Baek Mo-sa could be at odds now and he is sending a message to the group. Hearing the last message sent by Baek Mo-sa to find clues nearby made Ji-hyuk remember the same words Director Kang told him when he just got back after his disappearance.
As bargained, DC Do resigned from her post and Director Kang who was pushed by DC Lee takes her place. DC Do tells Ji-hyuk about how the Domestic Intelligence Bureau has been taking the reign of the organization.
She reminds him how the truth can never be monopolized. That it will be different for anyone and depends on where the person stands. She also asks him a favor to watch out for Director Kang.
Expecting to get the vacated position of DC Do, Director Jung contains his rage and listens to DC Lee’s promise of his hard work fruition and loyalty in due time. He finds Director Kang wallowing in alcohol and hands an intel.
While working to restore the PDA, Je-yi was summoned by her superiors for their last team dinner. She learns about their team’s expected dissolution and how the corrupt domestic team with not much contribution shakes the organization whenever a national election approaches.
“Why did we suddenly change target?”
Mulling over the pieces of information from Shenyang mission, Ji-hyuk targets North Korean leader Ri Dong-chul to hold key information. He disrupts Linwei’s meeting and retrieves information that Ri Dong-chul’s son is involved with drugs through Huayang gang. It became leverage for Sangmuhoe to demand something in return.
Discovering a distinct code in the messenger program of the PDA device, Ji-hyuk and Je-yi head to meet the CEO of a huge infotech company, Planet. However, they get no information but a warning that the CEO is watching over them. Ahead of Crime Information Center dissolution, transfer notices were given to Ji-hyuk and Je-yi who will both going to Domestic Investigation Bureau.
Ji-hyuk visits Director Kang who shares the same animosity with him. Both blaming each other for Su-yeon’s death, Ji-hyuk tells him what Su-yeon said before she died. That she is indebted to someone who pushed her to the wrong path.
An acquaintance of Je-yi who worked at Planet met a cryptic accident. So she was asked by her friend to check on it. Together with Ji-hyuk they probe deeper into her call logs and plans. They also learn about two professors recruited by Sangmuhoe and how the organization is connected to Planet.
Inferring the gathered personal information by Planet is used by Sangmuhoe to create a model to change the people’s voting patterns using the two professors, thereby meddling with the elections.
“Your father didn’t go missing. He was sold off by someone.”
Ji-hyuk seeks Linwei to get more information about Ri Dong Chul and learns that NIS wants him owing to his possible defection move. He gets even more surprised to know that Ri is already dead on the night they made the attack at Shenyang. A new question arises of who killed Ri Dong Chul before Sangmuhoe got him.
Meanwhile, Chief Ha meets Ji-hyuk and reveals DC Do has been gathering NIS Black Ops agents. From the call logs Je-yi asked her former colleague to trace, she discovers her acquaintance who recently died was last in contact with a man from NIS. Urging Ji-hyuk not to call the number, Je-yi was hung up on the phone and sees DC Lee at the parking lot.
Ji-hyuk calls the phone number Je-yi gave him. When the owner of the phone number answered the call, Ji-hyuk gives him two hours to meet at a rendezvous point or he will spill the details involving Ri Dong Chul.
DC Lee speaks with Je-yi if she saw Baek Mo-sa, and if she recognized him to be her father. He tells her how the best NIS agent was not missing but was sold to the North Korean Security Agency in exchange for critical information on high explosive elements. He gives her the project file details about her father’s case to find out herself the person in charge of his father’s disappearance.
“Listen up. I’ll tell you something only I know.”
At the rendezvous point, Ji-hyuk sees an approaching car. He gets off the car to meet the owner of the phone number. At that same moment, Je-yi checks the information given by DC Lee and discovers DC Do was in charge of it.
After a series of evasion from the raging car, Ji-hyuk sees Director Kang’s bloodied face. He rushes him to the hospital just as Je-yi goes to see DC Do with a gun in her hand. Je-yi points her gun at DC Do who signaled her men to back off. She confronts her about the truth of what happened to her father. Unknown to her, Baek Mo-sa is inside DC Do’s car.
Ji-hyuk opens the email from Chief Ha and sees his shabby self sharing a new piece of information of how one of his teammates in Shenyang is in contact with outsiders. He suddenly feels a headache as the face of Ri Dong Chul’s murderer resurfaces in his memory. The traitor in his team turns out to be his teammate – Kim Dong Wook.
The Veil Episode 8 Musings
The NIS world presented in The Veil has such a problematic relationship between domestic and foreign bureaus. Both DC Lee and DC Do are hiding their playing cards so well which adds to the unwavering thrill factor of this series.
Admittedly, I also forgot the existence of Kim Dong Wook. But that’s because the writing of this series is really brilliant in terms of leading the viewers to its projected conflicts while withholding and hiding information.
There’s definitely more to DC Do and Baek Mo-sa’s connection. It’s also hard not to be leery of DC Lee coaxing Je-yi to go to his side. We also want to know if Baek Mo-sa is really Je-yi’s father. If he is, will there be an ounce of fatherly love left for him?
What I can’t understand among all the characters in The Veil is Director Kang. Since day 1, we don’t know what he really wants. His words, actions, thoughts, alliance, and betrayals all don’t make sense.
Why Ji-hyuk opted for installment sending of video clues also makes me smile and annoyed at the same time. Nevertheless, it impels the enthralling drive since the fragments of his memories are slowly helping with the puzzle he is solving.
Impressively, following a relatively big cast moving in the elaborated narrative is one of the merits of this series. Now, another question posited is if Kim Dong Wook is alive.
In the preview revealed, it looks like Ji-hyuk and Je-yi will be working on opposing sides. A looming involvement of NIS and Sangmuhoe seems to be the end-game direction of The Veil‘s labyrinthine picture. It will also tie up the loose threads of the truth behind Ji-hyuk’s failed mission.
The Veil is available on Viu for International fans.
