The Veil Episode 9 Key Moments
“If you’re sure about this, don’t beg for an answer. Pull the trigger.”
Unfazed at Je-yi’s gunpoint, DC Do inches closer and dares her junior to pull the trigger. Assessing her half-hearted rage, she taunts her to bring a real gun next time that can really harm her. All the while, Baek Mo-sa stares at Je-yi from the car with an unfathomable expression.
Ji-hyuk ponders on the cryptic cause of Director Kang’s car accident. He is reminded of the same case about Je-yi’s acquaintance whose car seemed to have been manipulated.
Picking up the clue he got about Kim Dong Wook’s betrayal, he also learned that another video will be sent after a week that will give details of that unfortunate Bloody Friday and the person who killed the team members. However, Ji-hyuk needs to figure out the rat in the organization first before watching the video.
“Just so she could gain results, Deputy Commissioner Do sold my dad and sent him to the North.”
Ji-hyuk meets Je-yi and she asserts that there could be a variable other than Sangmuhoe involved in Ri Dong-chul’s death. She also takes the opportunity to cut their connection after confirming that he asked DC Do to tap on her phone.
Warning her that they will become enemies once she turns her back, Je-yi replies how he never treated her as his colleague. Unknown to them, their conversation was captured by DC Lee.
Je-yi was summoned by DC Lee and she straightforwardly asks him what he will do to Baek Mo-sa if he captures him. Understanding her woes of the possibility that she could be her father, he replies he’ll expose his misdeeds, unlike DC Do who probably will kill him right away. When Je-yi asks about his knowledge of Sangmuhoe, he gives her a vague response about power-wielding.
“Take it all in. This is our future.”
DC Lee brings Je-yi to a place he declared to be the future. He hints at his project of assimilating an IT company’s power of processing personal information.
Connecting Argos as the program from Planet, DC Lee affirms they created a backdoor from Planet’s server, to get the information accumulated by the search engine company. The mission set is to monitor information to trace Baek Mo-sa. Je-yi begins to work and finds DC Do’s home is under surveillance.
Ji-hyuk visits Dong-wook’s wife and retrieves information about how he was agitated before his last business trip. His wife narrates how he worried about the task given by the higher-ups because he felt bad for his colleagues.
Contemplating what he learned from Dong-wook’s wife, Ji-hyuk goes for another puzzle of finding another person connected to the mission.
DC Do discusses the movements of people with her assistant. Since DC Lee has not made his move yet, she decides to make the first move.
Knowing Je-yi is under DC Lee’s special task group, she sent information by Morse Code assuming she’s watching her place. She reports what she found out to DC Lee and he is quick to say how Baek Mo-sa is brewing revenge directed to DC Do. He advises her to monitor their expected movements soon.
Meanwhile, Ji-hyuk confronts Director Jung of the tip-off about Planet from Young-ju that he also told Director Kang. Using his mistake as leverage, Ji-hyuk asks Director Jung to help with crucial evidence to prove Director Lee is the head of Sangmuhoe. However, Director Jung declines and warns him not to push his luck.
“You and I have a lot in common.”
DC Lee’s Argos’ team is busy with a tip on Baek Mo-sa. Tracing his men, they monitor the movements and sees DC Do arriving with her bodyguard. Tapping on her phone conversation, she speaks about trying to clear things up.
With snipers targeting Baek Mo-sa, Ji-hyuk rushes to where the meeting is set. He receives a tip from Je-yi to stop the snipers. A blast erupts creating a fog in the scene. Just as Baek Mo-sa points his gun at DC Do, Ji-hyuk stops him with one of his men at gunpoint.
Hinting he knows about Ji-hyuk’s ordeal, he shares how without his memories, it does not mean that the past did not happen. Shooting his underling, Baek Mo-sa escapes. It turns out Je-yi has proposed joining Director Lee’s team so they could get information. In return, Ji-hyuk can’t kill Baek Mo-sa.
Confronting DC Do about the mission she gave Dong-wook, she refutes ordering Ri Dong-chul to be killed and points it to DC Lee. Processing the new information he gathered, Ji-hyuk assessed Chun-woo was ordered by Sangmuhoe to eradicate the team.
After almost being kidnapped, Director Jung opens his mouth about Director Lee’s ruthless desire to control the public. He tells Ji-hyuk to get hold of the research information to stop him. He also clarifies that DC Lee was responsible for selling the best foreign agents by tipping North Korean Security Agency. One of the agents taken was Baek Mo-sa.
DC Lee visits Planet’s CEO to put him back in his place after changing the configuration setting of Planet. He is left with no choice but to relent to the demands of DC Lee.
“You couldn’t save your old colleagues but you should save her.”
Ji-hyuk tracks the professor hired by Sangmuhoe who leads him to Planet’s CEO to decrypt the file he needs. But, the authorization to decrypt is unfortunately with Director Lee who came face to face with Ji-hyuk.
Reasoning his grand dream to bring change for the sake of field agents who painstakingly took the blow while their superiors just come and go. He cites how they have become a tool to execute orders and how were held on a leash without power to fight them.
Unyielding to DC Lee’s vision, Ji-hyuk castigates him for the deaths of his teammates to cater to his nonsensical dream.
Bringing in Je-yi to subdue Ji-hyuk, the latter relents.
Just in time, Director Kang who woke up called to rein DC Lee. Ji-hyuk’s last video was received by Director Ha. Patching the video to Planet’s headquarters, the spectators listen to Ji-hyuk’s revelation of who killed his teammates.
The Veil Episode 9 Musings
At this point, I really want to talk to Ji-hyuk for orchestrating a clue-instructed mission for himself and pulling off a surprise twist like that. The hints of the past coming back to bite him, really bit him hard. Now, we end up with a new question of what transpired before the development revealed in this episode.
It’s amazing how this series is dialog-heavy yet it makes sure that the viewer’s attention is locked to it. If there’s one thing The Veil taught us is how things are not always what it seems to its set narrative. Thus, I’m going to wait if the cliffhanger of this episode will be answered or doubled in the next episode.
More so, because the pandora’s box called DC Lee was also unearthed, I supposed there’s more to Ji-hyuk’s probable investigation that will happen. If Baek Mo-sa also knows about Ji-hyuk’s predicament, there’s a lot of conspiracy theories we can think of that happened somewhere in between. Honestly, delusional-looking Ji-hyuk giving clues does not make sense.
Why did he have to go through the trouble of giving a meaningful mission that would implicate him? Fortunately, the answers are up very soon. Or maybe, the drama will save the best for its finale next week.
