Thirty Nine Episode 9 Key Moments

Previously in Thirty Nine, Mi-jo learned that Joo-hee’s mom knows of her birth mom’s identity and has kept it a secret to protect her. Chan-young also met Sun-ju and reveal her dying condition.

“Double eyelids, She asked me if I had double eyelid surgery.”

A flashback of Mi-jo’s adoption process shows how the Cha family took her with all their heart. Back then, young Mi-jo was scared that she will only stay for a few nights, but her mom promised that she can stay for a thousand nights and more.

At present time, when her emotions subsided, she talked about her disappointment in her birth mother who know nothing about her. What’s worse is how she felt her birth mom does not feel any sort of remorse for giving her away for adoption.

Wanting to be honest with her adopted family, Mi-jo goes to their house to share the news. However, when she sees her mom injured, she changed mind and just helped her father clean the house.

At night, she shared a happy meal brought by her sister Mi-hyun and as usual, she happily bicker with her.

“You worked hard for a long time. Don’t think about getting another job. Put it to good use. That’s what I want you to do.”

Chan-young’s reverie gets interrupted when her parents arrive. They reveal finding a place nearby but she urges them to stay in her place. Learning they have a new car, she excitedly hopes to go back to the mall that belittled them before.

Meanwhile, Joo-hee shares with her mother about the trip they had to meet Mi-jo’s mom. She also reassures her that they were all worried about her for keeping it on her own.

The next day, they went to the bank and her mother gifts her money that she has been saving for a while. Refusing to accept it, Joo-hee’s mom coaxes her to put it into good use as she deserves it.

Later, she meets with the girls who were both frustrated with her obliviousness in disregarding the chance she can get closer to Hyeon-jun.

“So what if I’ll be alone? You were alone for over a decade, so why would you worry about me? Can you stop please saying that? Please? Okay? Every day is so precious. Going on walks and getting calls from you are all so precious, so please stop saying those things.”

Meanwhile, Sun-joo again meets Chan-young to ask a favor in convincing Jin-seok to give up the custody of her child. That he can watch if she’s still not a good mother and take him away if that will happen.

Recollecting the first time she met Jin-seok and his desperate words of adoration towards a woman, Sun-joo confessed knowing that all those heartfelt words were meant for Chan-young.

Acknowledging her greed to covet a love she does not deserve, Chan-young agrees that the result of her shortcoming impacted not her and Jin-seok but her son, Ju-won.

When Chan-young met with Jin-seok, she relays Sun-joo’s request. But when she insists on him not to be alone out of worry, he burst out his emotions on his choice to be alone and just spend all the remaining time that they can spend together.

Realizing her mistake, Chan-young apologized and tells him to proceed with the divorce so they can be together.

“I will not condone your choices anymore. Mi-jo taught me that being silent was wrong. That I should protect those I love. She must be hurt and I don’t know what decision she will make. But I will persuade her. I’m going to spend the rest of my life with her.”

Seon-woo’s father meets Mi-jo and straightforwardly asserts his disapproval of her relationship with his son. Politely acknowledging his opinion, Mi-jo firmly stands on the impossibility of his request to be the reason for them to break up.

Learning about his father’s meeting with Mi-jo, Seon-woo gave an ultimatum to his father not to meddle with their affair. He declares his firm decision of spending the rest of his life with Mi-jo and leaves to see her knowing she could be emotionally distressed.

He finds Mi-jo at the clinic and brings her to Gangneung for a refreshing trip. Afterward, they go to a cafe that Seon-woo rented so he can make a proposal.

Knowing the situation she’s in, Mi-jo can’t help but think of her early conversation with his father. In front of the rings he bought, Mi-jo gives an unfathomable expression.

Beating her to share the chat she had with his father, he apologized right away. Convince by his heartfelt love declaration, she presents her hand so he can put the ring on her finger.

Thirty Nine

“A thousand nights over and over again. A thousand nights over and over. Please let us be together that long.”

Out to buy a present for her mom, Chan-young, unfortunately, fainted at a shoe store. It results in her failing to get the special cake she bought for her mom.

Enter her best friends to the rescue. Armed with bricks they shatter the glass wall of the cake shop and decide to cross the bridge when the outcome of their lawless act happens.

Chan-young rushes to see her parents while Mi-jo and Joo-hee stay at the shop to settle the deed. They turn themselves in and were able to convince the cake shop owner by using Chan-young’s dying story card.

Afterward, they go for a soju drink at a street stall and heartily chat about the recent events and memories they share.

Thirty Nine Episode 9 Musings

All the small, supporting and lead actors in Thirty Nine have been making sure their commitment is top-notch. But I have to say that Lee Mu Saeng is robbing the emotional moments impressively and that’s even with the talented actresses in the series.

Strong in sketching a heartbreaking pictures in a simple setting but with affecting lines, that last scene not just reminded us of the initial problem in the story. It made us realize that we, too, are going to send off this beautiful story soon.

Officially engaged, Mi-jo’s life confronts a predicament as her birth mother finds a way to contact her. We can foresee how she will pester her in the future so let’s hope that she can clearly draw the line that their connection stopped when she was sent to the orphanage.

It’s nice how the series gave Sun-joo a redeeming moment by highlighting the extraordinary love of Jin-seok towards Chan-young. Hopefully, Seon-woo’s father won’t be seen anymore after all the closing chats that only gave emotional stress to the characters.

Can Chan-young’s bucket list involving Joo-hee still happen?
