Twinkling Watermelon Episodes 5 and 6 Highlights

“If I stop the accident from happening, I may be able to change dad’s fate”

Putting two and two together, Eun-gyeol concludes that the accident that gave his father the scar also made him lose his hearing. Thus, if he can put a stop to said accident, Lee-chan will continue to hear and speak. Cue: Eun-gyeol asks Lee-chan to remain in his sight all the time for “just a year,” and the latter runs away.

Not being the type to give up, Eun-gyeol suggests a deal: Lee-chan should stick to him in return for joining the band as a guitarist. And when he fails at convincing Lee-chan, he ropes the band’s bassist into a challenge and nails his performance.

“I don’t have a big dream. I just want to see my grandson wearing a graduation cap”

Now, the band is complete. But there is a minor issue, though. The other three members aren’t on board with Lee-chan being the frontman. If he wants them to acknowledge him, he has to pull off a performance where he can #1 play an instrument and #2 sustain three high notes at least.

This serves as the perfect chance for Eun-gyeol. He will teach Lee-chan how to play the guitar but on one condition. Lee-chan has to go to college. Though he snaps at first, hearing it is his grandmother’s wish to see her grandson wearing a graduation cap, Lee-chan comes around.

Now that Lee-chan is studying and practicing hard, one might think the trouble is over. But no. Without a word of goodbye, our cellist boards the plane to study abroad. One can guess how Lee-chan would react upon hearing that news.

“I can no longer be the daughter you want me to be”

Instead of her sudden departure, Se-kyung’s sudden return is what fazes me. In just a few days, Se-kyung comes back as a completely different person. The one who wanted nothing to do with Lee-chan now shows up with amusement park tickets to support him. Also, she teases Eun-gyeol about coming back for him and how his overprotectiveness of Lee-chan can be mistaken for having feelings for him.

Why does it feel like the new Se-kyung is the daughter from the future who time-traveled the same way as Eun-gyeol to come to meet her mother’s first love? Also, are we getting a new ship here with Eun-gyeol and new Se-kyung falling for each other? Things are about to get interesting!

“On the day I first saw you, I got to laugh heartily for the first time in a long while”

While there are many questions about the new Se-kyung, we get more answers about Chung-ah. She led a tough childhood, being separated from her mother, and locked up by an evil stepmother. Growing up, Chung-ah only knew how to express herself with anger. But her life started to brighten up after coming across our troublemaker and vibrant Lee-chan.

After meeting him coincidentally twice, Chung-ah started following him around quietly. But things got tense between them after Lee-chan found out she was the one sending the invitation. Unaware she is actually deaf, Lee-chan got mad at her for not answering him. When he realized the truth and went to apologize, a misunderstanding ensued, making Chung-ah wrongly think he hated her.

Thanks to Chung-ah dropping her keychain behind, Lee-chan gets an excuse to go see her again. When he finds her, Chung-ah is burning with fever. So, he carries her on his back to the hospital. Elsewhere, Eun-gyeol also collapses on the ground after a sudden downpour. We end this week with a parallel of the mother and son getting admitted to the hospital.

“The moment you arrived here, everything started to change”

Before the hospital sequence, we had a fight between our father-son duo because of Se-kyung. Lee-chan will agree to do anything Se-kyung tells him to. And Eun-gyeol can’t stand this immature and pushover version of father. Having had enough, Eun-gyeol pleads with the music store master to help him return to where he originally belongs. But can Eun-gyeol go back to the same future he remembers?

Originally, his father and mother met each other in a sign language class and fell in love. But with Eun-gyeol’s attempts at preventing the accident, this meeting won’t occur. Yeah. Lee-chan and Chung-ah have already crossed paths, but the progress of their relationship will be different. We also have the matter of new Se-kyung and how her sudden return will affect everything. You see, changing the past might not be as simple as it appears.

Twinkling Watermelon Episodes 5 and 6 Musings

Initially, I had no problems with Eun-gyeol trying to change the past. But good intentions don’t excuse wrong ways. Eun-gyeol is basically forcing Lee-chan down the path he wants, ignoring the guy’s dreams and interests. The overprotectiveness was funny at first, but now it is getting suffocating.

True, it is hard to sit by and do nothing when one knows their loved one is going to get hurt. But sticking to Lee-chan all the time isn’t the answer. The same goes for the romance front. Eun-gyeol has to let Lee-chan decide whom he wants to end up with. And as things stand, we can see he will once again choose Chung-ah.

Brace yourself for a ride full of adventures, music and mystery as Eun-gyeol navigates the unknown in Twinkling Watermelon!
