Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Episodes 11 – 16 Key Moments
Fortunately, Do-yun survives and they move to a new safe house while Hwal and Sang-un prepare for their inevitable showdown with Ok Eul-tae. Initially, Do-yun asks Hwal to avenge him, but later he hopes for them not to proceed with it anymore.
During his confrontation with Ok Eul-tae, Hwal learns of how his past is shared with him a thousand years ago. That neither of them can live while the other survives. Si-ho witnessed ajumma in another trance moment that is after she sees ajumma‘s young self warning her not to delve more of Sang-un’s memories. In the trance moment, her foreboding words hint at how two lives that were not supposed to meet entangles again.
Bringing the family to another safe house, Hwal resumes tracing Eul-tae with Sang-un. Unfortunately, they got played by Ok Eul-tae leading to Sang-un being attacked and wounded. Her wound is exactly the same spot as what her past lives and sister had.
Sang-un sees cryptic visions of her past self and Hwal and they are definitely not on good terms with Hwal wounding her with his sword. Intriguingly, Hwal’s memories contradict Sang-un’s.
Eventually, the true events from a thousand years ago reveal the tangled lives and karma among them.
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Plot Recap
On a mission to pursue the bulgasal who got his soul, Hwal gets closer to its newest reincarnation named Sang-un. However, there’s more to his intertwined past with Sang-un. Along with that, another bulgasal, Ok Eul-tae is also keen to end the curse given to him by Hwal.
A thousand years ago, Hwal and Sang-un are peacefully living as a pair of bulgasals. But when Sang-un decides to live with humans because of two siblings she got drawn with, life changed. A crime she did not commit was pinned to her, thereby infuriating her pair and killing the townspeople.
Her pair died and gets reincarnated 600 years later branded by her curse. He reclaims immortality and sets his life to chase after the reincarnations of the woman who stole his soul.
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Peak Points
Strongly Portrayed Male Lead and Villain
Arguably the life of the party in Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, Lee Joon is the only element that stayed true in the series. He made a convincing character pitch that he’s just misunderstood.
Likewise, Lee Jin Wook committed to his role well, but him being tied up not even to his own memories marred the fascinating points of his character.
Forging Family Love
If there’s a takeaway in the series that we can look fondly at is how it presented the idea of how a family is forged not by blood but by love and shared pain. There’s no human or immortal that can be immune to genuine care, even Ok Eul-tae can attest to that.
Significantly emphasizing what anyone can do out of love for his family is the most consistent message Bulgasal: Immortal Souls successfully presented.
Bulgasal: Immortal Souls Series Musings
It took 16 episodes to get the overall picture of Bulgasal: Immortal Souls. Unfortunately, the drag deflated the high of the story. When I stopped recapping the series, that’s where the circling plot erupted.
Trapped past the 10th chapter, the last six episodes went back and forth recounting different versions of the story.
Nevertheless, the portrayals of the main characters deserve to be recognized. If only the length of the series was shortened since it pretty much can hold its own in just a dozen episodes.
With a promising plot, it’s a pity that it was not justified in the end. Along the way, the reincarnation element confused the storytelling. Disclosing the events from 600 years ago when everything happened a thousand years ago is just useless.
Even now, mulling over the aftermath of the series does not give any gratification. The backstories that were ambitiously presented unfortunately do not measure to the initial expectations.
Furthermore, the romance was offbeat and is literally overshadowed by the bromance stories featured, to be honest. Having characters bent on fulfilling their revenge plans from start to finish makes the series a tedious watch that does not impress at the very least.
