The Veil

The Veil Episode 10 Key Moments (Spoiler Alert!)

“Listen, you have to leave right now. I’m positive that intel leaked from your side.”

The shocking video revealing who killed Kyung-seok and Dong-wook reveals what happened at Shenyang a year ago. Ji-hyuk was asked by Choon-gil to leave for Shenyang. He also affirms that a traitor is on NIS side. Suspecting his teammates, they head to their next destination.

From afar, they witness the meeting attended by Chun-woo and Ri Dong-chul. Baek Mo-sa who knew they were spying even greeted them on their cameras. Back at their base, Kyungseok refuses to dig deeper but Dong-wook wants to get to the bottom of it. Ji-hyuk settles it by declaring they will not probe more but will focus instead on Ri Dong-chul.

However, Ri Dong-chul was killed and Ji-hyuk finds Dong-wook in the same room where the North Korean high-ranking official laid dead. Escaping the police, he finds his teammates both pointing their guns at each other. Dong-wook shoots his gun at Kyung-seok and explains he is a member of a covert organization inside NIS.

Just then, Dong-wook shoots his gun so Ji-hyuk also shoots him. He then realized that Dong-wook shot Chun-woo who entered the room without Ji-hyuk’s knowing.

His mistake for inadvertently killing Dong-wook put Ji-hyuk in a miserable state. With lunacy taking over his sense, he was about to kill himself but finds a will to plan erasing his memory to return and get revenge. Subduing DC Lee’s men, Ji-hyuk points his gun at the evil director, but Je-yi steps in to talk him out of it.

The sound of a gunshot fills the air as Ji-hyuk falls unconscious to the ground. DC Lee orders the arrest of Ji-hyuk and it also reaches the higher-ups convened in a meeting.

“Why do you believe in me when I can’t even believe myself?”

Je-yi is released from confinement and goes to seek Ji-hyuk. The latter regretfully voices the irony of his mission to find out who betrayed his teammates. Despite Je-yi’s reassurance of the situation that led to him killing Dong-wook, Ji-hyuk is resigned to own his mistake. Asking why she trusts him greatly, Je-yi responds that it’s because they are teammates. Silent tears run on Ji-hyuk’s face hearing her genuine care.

DC Lee moved fast in removing the traces of his connivance with Planet. He also forces Director Kang to agree placing one of DC Lee’s men in exchange for releasing Ji-hyuk immediately.

Director Kang visits Ji-hyuk asking for help so they can bring down DC Lee. He also clarifies that Ji-hyuk didn’t kill his father and assures him that memories are not perfect and he might rediscover new ones from what he has so far retrieved.

DC Do feeds information to Ji-hyuk of Kyung-seok’s involvement with Sangmuhoe. She suspects him to be the killer of Ri Dong-chul after he refused to defect to South Korea. She also gives the go-signal to Dong-wook to kill Kyung-seok.

Because DC Lee wiped out the evidence they can use against him, they are left with almost no hope to turn the tables and favor them. Director Kang, Chief Ha, Ji-hyuk and Je-yi work together by using the recent manipulated car accidents that can trace to DC Lee.

The victims can attest to how DC Lee prevented the bill restricting the retrieval of personal information. They also learn from Director Jung of the project Director Lee is brewing. Unknown to them, Director Jung is on a secret order from DC Lee.

“Aren’t chances given to the weak by those with power?”

DC Lee chances upon DC Do and they talk about the situation they are into with utmost respect but a clear warning. They both stick to their beliefs of what’s good for the organization.

Planet CEO Shin Su-young was dragged to meet Ji-hyuk’s team. Director Kang proposes for him to bring concrete evidence of DC Lee’s corruption. Through Director Jung, DC Do is made aware of CEO Shin’s movement and they agree to meet him before executing what he rightfully deserves.

It turns out that Director Jung is one with Ji-hyuk’s team in pinning down DC Lee. When Ji-hyuk visits DC Do, the latter claimed he doesn’t have anything to do with Ri Dong-chul’s death. It totally contradicts to DC Do’s story. It turns out that Kyung-seok witnessed Baek Mo-sa stabbing Ri Dong-chul out of revenge for abducting him 10 years ago.

Aside from that, DC Lee thinks that Baek Mo-sa intended to have an NIS agent be captured at the crime scene to cause uproar in diplomatic relations between the two Koreas. Wanting to cause trouble in the entire agency, Baek Mo-sa went to a premeditated plan but did not expect that Ji-hyuk would be able to escape the crime scene.

Hearing DC Lee’s words, Ji-hyuk responds he would still make his senior pay for his crimes. He leaves the detention room and sees Director Kim but receives a call from Je-yi who reports trailing Director Kim.

At the detention cell, DC Lee faces Baek Mo-sa who used Director Kim’s mask. Ji-hyuk rushes to check on DC Lee and finds him hung to death with no sight of the culprit.

The Veil Episode 10 Musings

Closer to a clearer picture, The Veil episode 10 reveals the Bloody Friday event in Shenyang. It also marks Ji-hyuk’s memories resurfacing back. If his story emphasized something, it would be the post-traumatic effects that no human can escape from, even the most trained spy. It ironically complements DC Lee’s vision, if he has adorned it with more humanity.

We lost count of how many times the story villain shifted in the series. We can even qualify all of the main characters being hero-villains. The Veil is like a microcosm of a wild jungle where a switch of loyalty to the reigning king means inevitable death.

Now that Baek Mo-sa is hinted to be at the end of the tunnel for Ji-hyuk and his team, this would pose a dilemma since Je-yi’s only request to him is not to kill him in case he is really her father. I’m also a bit wary in case the supposed “father and daughter” pull off a surprising plot reversal which is a staple in the narrative.

Admirably, even if this series introduced a lot of characters, and angles to the stories narrated through the perspectives of its big cast, it never faltered with its convincing momentum.

Ahead of the finale week, I’m already satisfied with what the series has gifted me so far. I’m not even expecting a happy ending, since I only wanted Ji-hyuk to get through his career and personal yearning.

Don’t miss the finale week of The Veil on MBC. International fans can watch it on Viu.
