Doing their best on their speeches, Seung-Yoo and Ye-Rin both aced the competition and bagged awards. However, Ye-Rin isn’t happy with what’s happening in the latest episode of Melancholia.
Meanwhile, Seung-Yoo slowly falls in love with Yoon-Soo and always looks to her with affection. With Seung-Yoo’s actions, people around the school start to speculate that there is something romantic happening between the two.

Melancholia Episode 5 Key Moments
Winning Moment for Ye-Rin and Seung-Yoo
Giving an emotional speech, Seung-Yoo caught the attention of his audience with his unique understanding of artificial intelligence.
When the winners are announced, Ye-Rin was so nervous because she thinks that she wouldn’t have an award. However, when her name was called she was relieved. The smile on her face fades when Seung-Yoo also won.
The parents of Seung-Yoo were very happy but Ye-Rin’s parents are frustrated because Seung-Yoo also won.
Seung-Yoo Opened Up to Yoon-Soo
After the awarding ceremony, Seung-Yoo opens up to Yoon-Soo about his life when he was admitted to MIT when he was 10.
Seung-Yoo cries his heart out and finally lets someone knows the reason why he considered quitting to study math even though he likes it so much.
Ye-Rin Continued Her Desperate Ways to Be on Top
After the speech contest, there has been a leak of information that Ye-Rin’s speech is made by a professional (which is true). This situation put Yoon-Soo in a tight situation because she is the one mentoring Ye-Rin.
Yoon-Soo didn’t give a statement about the issue and this put Ye-Rin enraged. Angry Ye-Rin cuts the break of Yoon-Soo’s bicycle and this causes Yoon-Soo a physical injury.
Moreover, at the end of the episode, Ye-Rin reveals the photo she took to principal Noh wherein Yoon-Soo is resting on Seung-Yoo’s shoulder. Ye-Rin also reiterates that Ms. Noh might use the photo someday.
Seung-Yoo’s Feelings for Yoon-Soo Went Deeper
In this episode, Seung-Yoo’s care for Yoon-Soo was very evident. Many students notice how Seung-Yoo takes care of Yoon-Soo even in small things like carrying her bag and things.
Seung-Yoo also ran fast when he saw that Yoon-Soo falls from her bike and immediately carries her on his back. Meanwhile, Yoon-Soo’s fiance, Sung-Jae also notices that Seung-Yoo might have a crush on Yoon-Soo.
Ending the episode, Seung-Yoo texted Yoon-Soo to meet up. Drenched by the rain, Seung-Yoo went to Yoon-Soo and asks what to do if he falls in love with a problem.
Yoon-Soo was confused but Seung-Yoo said that he can’t stop himself from falling in love and is crazy to solve this problem.
Melancholia Episode 5 Musings
I must say that Ye-Rin took the spotlight in this episode. I can see her struggle to be the best and the top student but Seung-Yoo blocks her way because of his natural talent in Mathematics.
I don’t know who’s to blame but I believe that Ye-Rin’s parents are the most reliable people why Ye-Rin craves for excellence to something that she doesn’t even enjoy.
The never-ending anxiety that Ye-Rin feels whenever someone better came in slowly eats her along with her happiness. That’s why parents need to give freedom to their children so that they can excel on their own.
Meanwhile, Seung-Yoo starts to fall in love with Yoon-Soo. My heart is always fluttering when Seung-Yoo looks at her with such affection. Even though Yoon-Soo is engaged, Seung-Yoo recognized his feelings and didn’t repress them.
The scene under the red umbrella felt like Seung-Yoo’s confession to Yoon-Soo. As an intelligent man, I guess he can’t directly tell Yoon-Soo that he likes her, that’s why he used the phrase “I can’t help but fall in love with this problem and crazily want to solve it.”
I guess this is how mathematicians confess their feelings and still use math as a way to express it. I just hope that the next episodes would be a fast-paced one because I’m really excited about how the two would get back their reputation.
