Still refusing to be Lee San’s concubine, Deok-im is adamant in her decision in the 13th episode of The Red Sleeve.
While waiting to hear Deok-im’s answer, Lee San painfully learns through his mother that Deok-im does not wish to be his royal concubine. Nevertheless, he allows her to make her final decision.

The Red Sleeve Episode 13 Key Moments
“It is only the two of us. We are not soldiers. We should only pretend to find.”
Staying in his office late at night, Lee San reluctantly consults his royal guard on how to win a woman’s affection.
He then stops listening to his guard because his advice to appear weak to them does not seem to make sense.
Prior to their departure, rebels attacked the King and his guard in his office, but they were apprehended and several of them were captured.
In accordance with the King’s order to locate the remaining rebels hidden in the palace, Head Lady Seo directs the court ladies to proceed in pairs in search of the other rebels.
Afterwards, Deok-im is left to work with Wol Hye. While searching, she senses something coming from the bushes.
She was meant to confront the rebel but was stopped by Wol Hye, who explains that it was too risky because they were not soldiers and that they should merely pretend to look for them.
“You should not say that. You are the one who gives me pain.”
In conversing about what the King should do with the rebels, Deok-im unambiguously advises him to eliminate and punish the source of evil. Apparently, she is suggesting Lee San kill his own brother, who is the rebel leader.
Regretting her remarks to the King, Deok-im laments her mistake of blurting out that he must kill all the rebels.
The following day, Deok-im and Lady Seo are mending the king’s bed when his guard brings a drunken Lee San in.
After Deok-im goes to get some tea, she returns to the king’s chamber to discover that both Lady Seo and his guard have been dismissed.
Observing Lee San still not resting on his bed, Deok-im also realizes he is suffering from knowing he must order his own brother’s execution.
She then inquires as to whether he is hurt. Whereas Lee San says that she is not entitled to ask the question because Deok-im is the one causing him pain.
“If I become your royal concubine, I need to give everything to you and I will have nothing.”
Given that Lee San did not discuss with the Queen Dowager regarding her brother’s exile, she made a hard decision on the matter of his spouse order.
After learning that her mother also permits Queen Dowager to choose his royal concubine, he approaches her only to discover that her mother recently asked Deok-im to be the King’s concubine and she turned him down.
Consequently, Lee San calls Deok-im and requests a book from his library. When Deok-im arrives, Lee San corners her and confronts her, inquiring as to why she is so determined about not being his royal concubine.
Lee San is informed that if she becomes his royal concubine, she will be required to give up everything and will be left with nothing.
The Red Sleeve Episode 13 Musings
While Lee San continues to receive rejections from Deok-im, we can’t help but empathize with him. He even consults his royal guard on how to win a woman’s heart.
Consider how agonizing it would be to be rejected by someone you adore multiple times. Without a doubt, the suffering would be intolerable.
On the other hand, as we have seen in this chapter, it is not easy for Deok-im either. She is emotionally suffering as a result of her refusal to let Lee San into her life.
She waits outside his chambers as she is required to do as the King’s court maid and as her work for the rest of her existence. Meanwhile, Lee San spends the night with Deok-ro’s sister, his newly assigned concubine.
In the thirteenth episode of The Red Sleeve, we saw Deok-im finally explain the true reason she refuses to be Lee San’s concubine. Assuming that Lee San is currently aware of Deok-im’s motive for continuously rejecting him, we hope that he fully understands her.
However, just as everyone has their own limitations, Lee San does as well. We only wish he would not abandon his pursuit of Deok-im and that she would recognize that she, too, would find happiness as Lee San’s woman.
