My Liberation Notes Episode 13 Highlights
“What’s the big deal about some guy leaving? He ran because he was afraid of being happy.”
Needing to declare their business’ real income, Gu keeps the books in check, and heartlessly collects payment from a woman who frequented their host bar. Drinking in his office, he faces awkwardly a baby after a man brought his child to a bar.
Gu eats breakfast at 4 a.m., and looks at the food, being reminded of Mi-jeong. Calling his assistant this time as Yeom Mi-jeong and asking him how he wants to lift his mood, Gu grants his request to come back to Naju.
Consequently, he goes to the train station, looking forward to coming back to Sanpo.
Turning back the story during the fall season, Mi-jeong’s boss informs her of what she could not include in her portfolio. Despite the discouragement, she possesses a brave attitude while talking with her colleague.
At home, her mother asks about Gu’s contact since a decision is needed on the house he paid a year’s worth of rent.
Wandering in the pitch dark mountain, Mi-jeong encounters a frightening dog. She picks up a stick, but the dog then passes by her, and she realizes her thoughts about being abandoned.
“Even emperors who ruled everything were afraid.”
Blow drying the hair of the man Hyeon-a used to date, Chang-hee hears about how often Hyeon-a has talked about him. However, he brushes it off, and goes home after Hyeon-a arrives drunk in the hospital.
Asked why he is still in bed and not washing up, Chang-hee acts like he is on his way to work. However, Gi-jeong reveals Chang-hee has resigned from his job by shouting it when their truck passed by.
The truck stops and Chang-hee runs back home. However, he sees the truck move headed to its original destination, and he then goes back to bed.
Recalling his thoughts when he was about to resign, Chang-hee realizes that the life he is living is not his path. He also reflects on living a life with no desires.
“I can’t force myself to live for something I don’t really desire.”
Justifying Chang-hee’s resignation, Gi-jeong explains that exploring one’s career path is the trend. Their father questions what Chang-hee’s plans are, and Chang-hee cries out how clients he handled appreciate him, but not his father.
Gathering crops, Chang-hee’s father recalls the time he was proud of his son in a running event. On the other side of the field, a family compares their crops, and Chang-hee’s father gets competitive driving back. Encouraging his father to speed up, the truck crashes into the rice paddy.
Back home, Chang-hee’s mother complains saying she’s tired of farming and serving her husband with no breaks. She then announces her plans of going back to church.
Making an effort to meet Tae-hoon, Gi-jeong waits for him at his restaurant even though she feels unwelcomed.
Curious about the man she is dating, Gi-jeong’s mother watches him together with her daughter in the restaurant. Although they agreed to act not knowing each other, Gi-jeong’s mother orders food for them as her judgment of him dissolves.
“Even when you don’t know how you’ll go on, if you pull yourself together, you can still find things that are bearable.”
Passing by the market in a good mood, the lady selling nearby asks Gi-jeong’s mother about finding their family dog after seeing Mi-jeong crying hard about losing it.
Realizing what really broke her daughter’s heart, she walks back feeling bad, and stares blankly, then goes to sleep.
Rising in the ranks for her entry, Mi-jeong submits an output to her boss’ desk and sees someone messaging her boss with the same name as hers.
Turning down to celebrate after winning, Mi-jeong wishes Gu to come to her.
Finally arriving in Sanpo, Gu waits for her in the train station. Not seeing her there, he walks to their house where a stranger greets him.
Asking if the house is the residence of Yeom Je-ho, the woman confirms it is, and turns out to be the new woman Mr. Yeom is living with.
Meeting again, Mr. Yeom shares what happened during the fall when his wife passed away and all his children moved to Seoul. Sitting outside, Gu opens the paper with Mi-jeong’s contact details.
