My Liberation Notes Episode 3 Highlights

“Guys can be sly as a fox too.”

Recalling the night she asked Mr. Gu to worship her, Mi-jeong deviates from her everyday routine. Drinking with her colleagues, she reveals how she’s missing the last train because she wants to avoid a man in their house, who is Mr. Gu.

With her colleagues’ curiosity about the man she’s pertaining to, Mi-jeong remembers how Mr. Gu assumes she was tricked into lending a guy some money, and warns her that he, himself, too might be like that guy.

Knowing nothing about each other, and nothing to do with anyone, Mr. Gu justifies his refusal of her request.

Walking back home late at night, Mi-jeong grabs a rock as she sees suspicious men. However, Mr. Gu comes to walk behind her, causing the men to leave the street.

Mi-jeong’s senior sends her a text message warning her not to ask for the contact number of his ex-girlfriend, making her cuss him out loud. However, her superior who is currently checking her output, mistakes he is the bastard Mi-jeong is calling.

“End things beautifully? Don’t make me laugh. There’s no such thing as a beautiful breakup.”

Drinking together at night, Chang-hee tells off Gi-jeong for scaring her blind date away. Trying to prove her point, Mi-jeong is ordered by her siblings to get some liquor at Mr. Gu’s, but she refuses to do so.

Entering drunk at Mr. Gu’s house, Chang-hee opens up his kitchen cabinets, which alarms Mr. Gu as he has Mi-jeong’s mail from the bank.

On her way home, Gi-jeong sees her male workmate in the convenience store with a lottery ticket. Finally finding her guts to ask, Gi-jeong confronts him for never giving her lottery tickets.

Discussing her question, Gi-jeong’s workmate elaborates on having a specific genre in finding love.

Riding the train back home, Gi-jeong sees Chang-hee’s ex-girlfriend crying. Discovering her reason for riding the train to their place, Gi-jeong confronts Chang-hee for his actions that led to his relationship’s breakup.

Following that confrontation, although late at night, Chang-hee comes to apologize to Mr. Gu for his rude behavior when he was drunk, suggesting to get to know each other more.

“Repetitive relationships you jump into to find something to love about yourself, only to come out of them even more sure of how unattractive you truly are.”

Reflecting on the men she has met so far, Mi-jeong laments on how gazes that look down on you exhaust you in your daily life.

Called again to the Joy support center for their clubs, Mi-jeong along with employees Jo Tae-hoon and Park Sang-min brainstorms about clubs that they should form.

Finally coming up with an idea for their club to avoid joining others, Mi-jeong proposes the Liberation Club, where they liberate themselves from their suffocating lives.

Agreeing to her proposal, they present the idea to the counselor, who then probes what they are going to do as a club.

Finishing their duties in the fields, Mi-jeong asks Mr. Gu if he has never felt whole before and whether he needs someone to worship him.

Passing by each other in the morning, Mi-jeong suggests to Mr. Gu that they should at least greet each other. In reply to what she said, Mr. Gu tells Mi-jeong to run because the bus is about to arrive.

My Liberation Notes Episode 3 Musings

Looking at the beginning of their stories, it may be understandable that it appears to be slow. With Chang-hee who complains about his failed relationship, hopefully, the next episodes progress towards his concrete steps toward liberation.

Chang-hee’s opinions while drinking with Gi-jeong highlights his feature of being old-fashioned, which may be somehow detestable on Gi-jeong’s part. Gi-jeong, although quirky to some, has interesting stances. Her character can be appreciated as she is clear on what she believes and stands for.

Even though their path toward liberation is just beginning to open, Mi-jeong’s initiatives in the episode open up promising progress. Her interactions with her colleagues and deviation from her routine are aligned with her goals.

Bearing truth in the real world, what makes life exhausting and people sick is truly people that look down on us. Brightening up her cloud, her incoming clubmates appear to be a future pillar of support.

Adding to those, we see Mr. Gu speaking more words to Mi-jeong. Like Mi-jeong, we too know little of Mr. Gu, but we shall remain eager to see and understand his life story.
