My Liberation Notes Episode 12 Highlights

“So that’s how heavy hatred is. I felt like something was dragging me down to the ground.”

Happily texting Tae-hoon on a Sunday, Gi-jeong now enjoys her relationship with him.

While talking about the animals they raise and eat, Mr. Gu jokingly asks Mi-jeong to name him so that he won’t get eaten.

Still protesting Tae-hoon’s relationship with Gi-jeong, Gyeong-seon gets called out by her sister. She is asked not to bother Tae-hoon, and pretend not to know about the relationship since she dearly wants to protect Yu-rim no matter what.

With the realization of having someone you like, Gi-jeong lets go of her negative emotions towards people, appreciating how light the feeling is.

A visitor comes for Mr. Gu in Sanpo, and Mi-jeong’s mother welcomes him inside their house.

Although he acts like an older brother close to Gu, Mi-jeong’s father remains keen on the man’s outer appearance.

Alone together, the man asks Gu to come back and give up the life of lies he is living right now. He informs Gu of how everyone’s lives are ruined right now since they all had a good time when he was still around in the club.

They finish off their conversation with the man suspecting that Gu has a girl in Sanpo. Walking up near the stray dogs in the field, Gu sets up a big umbrella.

“Well, I’d be lying if I said I was unhappy, but I’m not happy enough to smile like this.”

A new member is welcomed into the liberation club, and the lady explains her difficulty in putting up a facial expression that does not reflect her honest emotions, especially during funerals.

Members of the club then run down the rules of the club, wherein they maintain honesty to one’s self.

Mi-jeong then shares it with Mr. Gu while walking home together, wondering how all people pretend. Gu then tells her that she just tells whatever she wants now.

Chang-hee eats together with his workmates, and as he rants again, his friends tease him about how the magic of his dream car is beginning to wear off. They suggest to him on having a girlfriend, not a wife.

Da-yeon comes over for dinner, and she is teased together with Chang-hee, who then publicly offers her a ride home.

However, after sending everyone home, Chang-hee sends Da-yeon home by taxi since he failed to contact the car owner that was blocking his way. It turns out, he has misread the number on the car.

Laying out the rules of dating each other, Gi-jeong asks Tae-hoon to never drive her home. On the other hand, Tae-hoon briefs Gi-jeong that she could expect suddenly canceled plans often.

Recalling his conversation with his daughter, Tae-hoon admires Gi-jeong for how she makes him feel relaxed.

Rejecting the offer to be driven home, Gi-jeong then shouts that they should sleep together next time.

With no footage available for the scratch on the bumper of the luxury car he is driving, Chang-hee feels deeply troubled.

Meanwhile, Mi-jeong’s coworker encourages her to join the design contest of their company after their boss left out temporary workers from joining it.

“Being ordinary is when you have common desires.”

Asked to buy dried pollack for the memorial rights, Chang-hee’s father spots him driving the luxury car. Even before the ceremony, he appears to be troubled, searching how much to replace its bumper.

During dinner after the rights, Chang-hee’s father confronts him about it, and he reveals that Gu owns the car.

Stern on stopping his son from driving another person’s car, Chang-hee bursts out to his father for always going against his happiness.

Du-hwan pushes Chang-hee to show Gu the scratch, and when he did, Gu began running after him. They lose each other as they reach the train station.

Chang-hee visits the man Hyeon-a has been talking about in the hospital. As for Gu, he meets again with his recent visitor, and reveals that Baek sells drugs.

The man then gets ready to attack Baek, and following that, the police raid the club to catch Baek.

After watering the plants together, Gu announces his plans to leave, and Mi-jeong tears up alone in her room.

She visits his house saying she will still call him sometimes, and ask him to pick it up. However, he argues that she does not know his past nor the life he will be living.

Gu asks Mi-jeong to curse or get angry, but she chooses not to. She says she feels sad since she also cannot ask him to stay.

Even though Gu asked her to be an ordinary person, Mi-jeong sees herself living the way she is at present for a long time.

As Gu leaves Sanpo with his car, the stray dogs are also detained by the animal services. Mi-jeong looks out at Gu’s empty house, and cries hard as his number cannot be reached.

Baek dies during the chase with the police as he lands on the reinforcement bars. At his funeral, Gu laughs while drinking.

Mi-jeong reflects on how she used to curse other guys she used to be with, but will always be wishing Gu well.

My Liberation Notes Episode 12 Musings

Gu’s varying expressions can be seen in this episode with his chase with Chang-hee. It has also been confirmed how he used to run a club before in Seoul. His laughter during Baek’s funeral is probably not because of joy, and is of something else.

With his sudden departure from Sanpo, Mi-jeong and her father’s lives are somehow shaken. Gu’s presence was special in a way that it had a surprisingly positive impact on their lives.

For Gi-jeong, she has been getting the most out of her dating experience. Luckily, Tae-hoon’s other sister does not want to interfere with their relationship, unlike Gyeong-seon. Moreover, it appears Yu-rim begins to understand her father’s choices.

Even without Gu, Mi-jeong hopefully fights for what she can. Thanks to Gu and the liberation club, her mindset and outlook have surely grown.

Moving again to Seoul, Gu’s morale in the city versus the countryside could be compared. We shall look forward to his own battles, and his possible reunion with Mi-jeong.
